At a meeting late Monday afternoon at the Center Township Municipal Building, the Board of Supervisors granted the liquor license transfer from the former Main Street Bar in Aliquippa to the Cinemark Cinemas location on Wagner Road in Monaca.

Paul Namey, the same lawyer who spoke on behalf of Sheetz recently in a similar case, spoke on behalf of Cinemark USA at the meeting. He alerted the board of supervisors, as well as those in attendance, that approval of the transfer did not automatically mean that the theater will start selling alcohol immediately:

 

Matt Dunn also spoke on behalf of Cinemark USA, and he emphasized that the selling of alcohol would not be a call to rowdiness or dive bar-like atmospheres, but simply is an extra luxury that would be available for a small part of Cinemark’s core audience:

 

 

Dunn, in response to a question by Center police chief Barry Kramer, said that the Cinemark location would sell beer and wine, as well as frozen mixed drinks that contain liquor. He mentioned the average price of such drinks range from $6 to $9.

The Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls has been in operation for 115 years and still going strong. One example: the Library will be hosting “Clutches For Carnegie: A Purse Bash” at Shakespeare’s in Ellwood City on October 21.

Sandy Hienz and Jean Barsotti from the Carnegie Free Library joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss the upcoming Purse Bash, including the types of purses that attendees can bid on, as well as the 50/50 and amenities that will be provided. They also discussed the future fundraising events for the Library, as well as the update on the services it provides to the city of Beaver Falls.

Since 1993, Dr. Paul Caton has been serving the citizens of Beaver County with his work at Caton Chiropractic located on Darlington Road in Patterson Township. September 20 marked the 25-year anniversary of Caton Chiropractic.

Dr. Caton joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County on September 24 to reflect on his 25 years of practice in Beaver County. During the interview, he talked about how he got started in the practice of chiropractic service, his former radio show on Beaver County Radio, and current endeavors involving the Beaver County Special Olympics.

Dr. Paul Caton grew up and graduated from Hopewell High School before heading off to Iowa for undergraduate studies and ultimately graduating with honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. He was an all star athlete, quarterbacking the Hopewell Vikings in high school and lettered in both football and baseball in college. Dr. Caton was a pioneer in Chiropractic Health care as he was one of the earlier practitioners to use a weekly radio show on WBVP and WMBA as a forum to educate and reach out to patients. The Caton Chiropractic Health Hour  came on the air shortly after the practice was opened and aired  for for about 15 years afterwards. Dr. Caton is also a prominent member of the community and devotes time to serving others as a member of the Beaver Falls Rotary Club.

“Touring & Tasting Delights” is the moniker given to this year’s edition of the AAUW Kitchen Tour, taking place on September 29 throughout the Beaver and Brighton Township Areas. The headquarters of the event will be once again at Dutch Ridge Elementary School.

Jean Macoluso and Norma Kehr are two members of the Beaver Valley Branch of the AAUW who joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss the different elements to the Kitchen Tour, including where to buy tickets, how to navigate the tour, and what the proceeds to the event go to.

The public meeting by the Beaver Area School Board was a tensely politicized one, filled with those in support of Steve Wellendorf, the principal put on administrative leave by the school at the start of the school year, and those in support of the decision to oust Wellendorf by Superintendent Carrie Rowe.

Before the meeting, many came out in the rain to gather in support of Wellendorf, including one attendant who emphasized faith:

 

Rally organizer Luke Berardelli, a former Beaver grad, made his point clear at the flagpole before the meeting:

 

The meeting started, but it was only after 40 minutes of financial and administrative business that the subject of Wellendorf’s absence was brought up. Superintendent Rowe acknowledged her stance as a gay woman, but vehemently denied that Wellendorf’s firing was discriminatory against Christians. She then drove home the point that hate will not be allowed in Beaver under her jurisdiction:

 

As he had planned to, Berardelli spoke to the board peacefully, but sternly, advocating that Rowe’s demand for co-existing could be possible with the reinstatement of Steve Wellendorf.

 

Others speaking were not as soft in their remarks, and the crowd inside the auditorium had several moments of restlessness. It was enough for one Beaver student to question the respect and integrity of the crowd:

 

As far as the reasoning behind Wellendorf’s absence, the school board remained closed about the specifics.

The Chiropractic Health Center in Chippewa joined forces with Pine Valley Camp in Ellwood City for “People Purpose Planet”, a project that helps local non-profit organizations in funding and awareness that they may not have had prior.

Dr. Pete Birchler, head doctor at The Chiropractic Health Center, and Joel Brubaker, Teen Camp Director at Pine Valley, came on A.M. Beaver County with Matt Drzik to discuss “People Purpose Planet”, as well as the individual happenings that each organization will be having in the near future.

An hour-long weekly work session at the Beaver County Courthouse found Commissioners Dan Camp and Sandie Egley opening the floor to guests and department heads alike. This was in contrast to the previous week where the Board of Commissioners’ updates dominated the meeting.

The main topic for Wednesday’s meeting was the continued speculation over the Watts Mill Bridge in South Beaver Township. Workin’ Bridges, an Iowa-based company that aims to restore historical bridges throughout the United States, appeared at the courthouse to talk about their interest and stake in the bridge built in 1878. Julie Bowers, who is the executive director of Workin’ Bridges, talked about the possible outcomes as she saw them:

 

Bowers also insisted that their passion for restoring bridges could branch out to other bridges in Beaver County; particularly the recently closed Fallston Bridge:

 

 

Meanwhile, Parks and Recreation director Tim Ishman spoke about how the heat has affected the condition of the Beaver County Ice Arena, which he also reminded those in attendance was still open to the public:

Ishman also mentioned during his time that the Economy Park pool was closed for renovation, and that there were several citizens interested in playing pickleball down at the Brady’s Run Park courts.

Commissioner Tony Amadio was absent from the September 5 work session due to a funeral.

Festival season is still in effect as the Good Samaritan Parish in Ambridge, for its 23rd year, will be hosting their annual Festival from August 30 to September 2.

Rose Filipponi & Leah Lesak from Good Samaritan joined Matt Drzik on the August 29 edition of A.M. Beaver County to discuss everything that went into the preparation and what is to come for the 23rd Festival, including the variety of food and music lined up for the weekend.

Has 76 ever looked this good?

Once again, guests and vendors from the Beaver Valley and surrounding areas took to the Big Knob Grange in New Sewickley Township for the 76th Annual Big Knob Grange Fair. Beaver County Radio was also there, as Matt Drzik & Ed Hermick brought the prize van, the Personality Prize Wheel, and of course…the prizes.
