It’s true that things are returning to normal, but normal doesn’t just mean all of the fun and colorful things that we missed…it also means reviving the somber and reverent honor that we give to those who made sacrifices for the country.

Thus will be the case in Rochester on Memorial Day this year, as the city will be celebrating with a morning parade following by a dedication for veterans and service members past and present as part of the Rochester Parks Project. Over 1,200 who served in the military will be recognized in stone, and that will be followed by a Memorial Day service at Rochester VFW Post 128.

John Barrett, the manager of Rochester Borough, joined Matt Drzik to talk about the festivities, which have been planned upon for several months. Barrett talked about the importance of honoring those who served with the dedication ceremony, the sponsors who are providing free refreshments during the course of the morning, and the plans in case of rain showers for Memorial Day.

After a year of wading in the murky waters of change and cancellations, it’s time for some football once again. Flag football, to be precise.

The Beaver County Flag Football League will be holding its championship matches on Saturday at Tony Dorsett Stadium in Hopewell, with ceremonies starting at 4:30 and going until sundown. There will be multiple food trucks and a live DJ on site, as the best of Beaver County’s flag-footballing K-through-9 youth will showcase their skills. Admission is free to the public, and masks are required.

BCFFL president Brad Robison joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to talk about the championship event, speaking about the long journey that it’s been for the league to reach this point. Robison talked about the platform that flag football gives for youth athletes in Beaver County, the emphases on safety and sportsmanship driven by the coaches and supervisors, and how such emphases can reshape the atmosphere of high school sports over the next decade.

Come rain or come shine, just please stay inside…the Beaver County Office On Aging will be presenting another Senior Day At The Mall in a drive-thru setting on May 12 from 10 until noon at the Beaver Valley Mall, located in the lot between Boscov’s and Harbor Freight.

Angela Gentile of the BCOA joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss this spring’s event, which comes at a time in which many seniors might be confused and wondering what financial or beneficial situations are approaching deadlines and which situations continue to have flexibility due to the circumstances of the last 14+ months. Angela talked about how many vendors that would typically have their own booths at the Senior Day when it was located inside the mall are presenting that kind of information to seniors who attend this drive-thru event on Wednesday.

Of course, there’s not just information in the bags. Gentile also mentioned that each bag will contain a securely wrapped donut along with a boxed lunch, and that several members from the Office On Aging will be in attendance to assist in bringing the bags to your car. The BCOA is asking those who are coming to the drive-thru to wait until the event begins at 10:00 AM, and to be patient as traffic may build up during the morning in the mall parking lot.

Plus, Beaver County Radio will be at the Senior Day At The Mall on Wednesday, providing updates during Teleforum from 10 until Noon.

1991 was a year that saw many different changes in the landscape of time and history. Operation Desert Storm brought global conflict to the news wires, the grunge explosion reshaped the landscape of popular music, and Pittsburgh saw the emergence of talent come to fruition as Mario Lemieux led the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup.

Also in 1991, Carleen McKee opened up Cohill Fashions in the College Hill section of Beaver Falls, and they are celebrating 30 years of providing loyal service to their customers throughout multiple generations.

McKee spoke with Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County about the landscape of opening up the shop back in 1991, and how the aforementioned Operation Desert Storm played a timely crucial role in kickstarting Cohill Fashions’ long run of success. She spoke about some of the loyal and most memorable customers she’s encountered over the last three decades, and how she promotes smaller design lines that aren’t offered in many of the “bigger” clothing stores around.

The perseverance and innovation of Cohill Fashions and the drive of Carleen McKee will be celebrated with a two-day Anniversary Sale located at the store on 3508 4th Avenue on College Hill in Beaver Falls. There will be snacks and treats for the customers along with “almost deals” that the staff will be offering on their various brands of clothing and jewelry. The fun begins on Friday, April 30, at 10:00 AM.

It’s one thing to even consider playing sports during the middle of a global phenomenon, but to succeed during one is going above and beyond to showcase the strength of an individual or team’s performance.

The Geneva College softball team, under the leadership of athletic director Van Zanic and his coaching staff, have done just that. The team is currently 29-5 on the 2021 campaign, including a school-record 17 game winning streak that has placed the Golden Tornadoes in a first-place section tie (so far) with Westminster (who are 28-2 overall) at 12-2 in the PAC.

Zanic spoke about this historic season with Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County on April 26, just 8 days shy of the start of the PAC tournament–which coincidentally rubs up right against Finals Week at Geneva College. That is one of many difficult hurdles that Zanic has had to persevere through with his squad, and he talked about the drive and focus that has propelled not just the softball team, but Geneva athletics as a whole to the heights that they have achieved on AND off the field.

Two years ago, Bags & Blessings began their mission to uplift and provide support for those struggling against the battle of dealing with cancer. Now in 2021, they continue to grow…in more ways than one.

Robin Redfern and Brandee Cercone from Bags & Blessings joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County on April 23 to discuss the recent planting of trees at Brady’s Run Park in conjunction with several Beaver County departments including the board of commissioners. The trees serve as a forever memoriam in honor of loved ones who have struggled with any battle. Redfern herself, who kicked off Bags & Blessings as a personal project around 2010, says that she was driven by her heart to create this avenue of acknowledgement for the citizens of Beaver County, and plans to continue developing more trees in more spaces as time and space allows.

The non-profit faith-based organization has donated hundreds of bags over the course of the last few years as Bags & Blessings has grown into a committee of roughly 50 members, and both Cercone and Redfern are seeking more to join up. The group will be hosting their second 5K in Bridgewater on September 11 (first since 2019), and they are also adding support groups to their repertoire of uplifting citizens in Beaver County. The pair recognized that their missions could not be completed without the help of local businesses and offices that have joined them in battling not just the disease of cancer, but the depressions and frustrations that take the toll on the heart and soul during the battle.
