The Class of 2020 from Penn State Beaver Campus, about 120 of them, came by bus to Franklin Center in Aliquippa on Saturday. The students mission was to paint wooden pallets to be placed on windows and doors in a blighted 2 block area of the town. Valerie McKelvy is the director of Serving U Beaver County and she told Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, “I believe the city has potential where the once flourishing business stood.” Students from all over the United States, not just Beaver and surrounding counties participated the project. The university’s director of student activities and residence life said “”We hope it becomes a tradition the program went well , and it allows for our campus to live outside the community and give back.” Students had orientation at the university on Friday, met with their advisers, and a bonfire was held Friday night . Local art studio owner Marlon Gist assisted with the project.

Lawrence County Teen Charged With Setting Home On Fire, With Family Still Inside
A 15-year-old Lawrence County boy is being charged as an adult after police say he set his New Castle home on fire with his family still inside. State police say the blaze was first reported at a home in Hickory Township at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Hopewell Township Hires New Recreation Director
Trisha Hannah of Brighton Township has been hired by the Hopewell Commissioners to replace Pam Fiejdasz as the township’s new Recreation Director. Fiejdasz took a position in the Central Valley School District as a paraprofessional. Hannah is a 1999 Penn State University Park graduate and did internships and worked for several park and recreation boards before coming to Hopewell. She tells Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, “I want to try and serve a variety of variety of recreation programs , and get the township’s fall events organized.” Local musicians she said, are invited to attend the ‘COUCH POTATO JAM” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Pavilion 1. Refreshments and concessions will be sold.
Beaver Falls Man Severely Burned While Fighting Fire At His Business
A man was flown to the hospital after being severely burned while fighting a fire at his business in Beaver Falls this morning. Emergency dispatchers say the flames broke out at around 10:30 this morning in the 200 block of Glendale Road at Pete Brown’s Auto Repair. Pete Brown was battling the flames with a fire extinguisher when the fire in the ceiling fell on top of him. He was rushed to the hospital. Officials have not given any update on his condition.

Ambridge Train Accident Victims Identified
Authorities have released the names of two people who were killed in an accident in Ambridge over the weekend. Police say 49-year-old Scott Meckling of Ambridge and 48-year-old Colleen Graham of Aurora, Colorado were hit by an Amtrak passenger train yesterday near the sewage treatment plant on Ohio River Boulevard. The train was carrying 215 people from Washington, DC to Chicago, but none were injured. Witnesses say the victims tried to beat the train across the tracks.
Students in Three Beaver County School Districts Head Back to School Today
A word of caution for area motorists this morning – kids are heading back to school in three Beaver County school districts. Today is the first day of school for students in the Aliquippa, Freedom Area and Central Valley school districts.
Half Dozen School Teachers Hired In Central Valley School District
Six new teachers , including a guidance counselor were hired by Central Valley School District, according to Superintendent Nick Perry. According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, Ken McLaughlin of Monaca, currently working in the Freedom School District, was hired as a 6-8th grade learning support teacher. Dr.Nicholas Unis announced that ipad training for parents will be in the next few weeks. Ipads will be issued for grades k-5 this year, also . Edward Eimiller, district technology director said parents can learn how the teachers will implement the program in the classroom. Perry announced that school starts on Monday.

Kindergarten Registration Underway In Aliquippa School District
Aliquippa Elementary School principal A’frica T. Shepard said this morning that any parent that gave the school permission to screen their child while in Head Start, but didn’t complete an enrollment packet , provide their child’s birth certificate , immunization record, or proof of residency, etc, your child is not registered at Aliquippa Elementary School. According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordani, in order for your child to register at AES, you must call Mrs. Julie Crisi for an appointment 724-857-7515 to schedule an appointment to officially register your child before they are able to attend kindergarten . This means until the process is complete, your child can’t attend kindergarten at AES. Head Start, Ms. Shepard explained is in our building, but is not a part of our school district.
