(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

The air in Beaver County is about to get a little louder.

The reason for that is a brand new series of concerts being presented by the many groups that are part of the Beaver Valley Musicians Union, starting with the Beaver County Brass at Chippewa Park on Friday, June 17. The concert begins at 7:00 PM and is free for the public to attend; the public is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating as well as their own refreshments.

BVMU vice president Tom Munroe and board member Bob Headland joined Matt Drzik on the June 14 edition of A.M. Beaver County to talk about the upcoming series of concerts by groups such as the Beaver County Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Swingin’ Bopcats Big Band–in all, seven groups that are members of the Beaver Valley Musicians Union. They also spoke about the ways one can become a member of the groups or the union; formal auditions are not required by the BVMU, but instrumentalists must provide their own equipment.

The Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center will be putting on that “American Opera”, as Justin Fortunato referred to it, this month in Midland. Darlington Days runs from June 3 to June 5, and it formally begins tonight with the first of two polo matches at the Darlington Polo Club under one of the world’s only lighted polo fields. “It’s crazy and amazing to see how many people are actually into it,” Mahon said. “The crowd gets into it. It’s a good feeling.” This year, the Darlington Polo Club will be holding a second match on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM as well.

Saturday also features the Darlington Days 5K Run/Walk at 8:00 AM, along with the annual parade through the main streets and backstreets of town beginning at 10:00 AM. There will also be live music at the main stage throughout Saturday afternoon and evening, along with museum tours presented by the Little Beaver Historical Society.

The weekend closes on Sunday with the 5th Annual “Cannonball Run” for motorcylists and other travelers beginning with registration at 10:45 AM at Greersburg Tavern, along with a Classic Car Show running from Noon until 4:00 PM throughout Market Street in Darlington. Richland Township Hosting Annual Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony On Monday

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“This is a traditional Memorial Day service that we’ve had at our post for many, many years; [it] goes back to when I was a kid.”

Bob Schleiden is no longer a kid, but as a member of American Legion Post #548 in Richland Township he still participates heavily in the Memorial Day Festivities. This year’s annual parade and ceremony will be held at the Richland Township Park on Monday, May 30 beginning at 9:45.

“The parade continues to grow,” Schleiden said to Matt Drzik on the May 27 edition of A.M. Beaver County. “It starts off with the Air Force Junior ROTC as the color guards, and we have elements of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts…and they’re followed by our first responders.” According to Schleiden, the parade also includes antique cars, old war Jeeps, the Pine-Richland marching bad, and horses from Babcock Stables.

Following the parade, a formal ceremony takes place that features patriotic music, awards, presentations, and it culminates with a “Final Roll Call” that honors service members from the area that have been lost to war or have recently passed on as veterans. “It certainly is a moment of healing,” Schleiden said.
