State Police Ramping Up Patrols During Holiday Season

This is Thanksgiving week and lots of travelers will be hitting the road. And that also means Pennsylvania State Police will be out in full force. Beginning today and continuing through New Years Day, all counties in Troop D coverage – that includes Beaver, Lawrence, Butler, Mercer and Armstrong Counties – will be under holiday enforcement. State Trooper Dan Kesten tells Beaver County Radio News’ Pat Septak there will be scheduled DUI checkpoints, increased radar usage and traffic monitoring this season.

U.S. Marshals Arrest Moon Homicide Suspect In West Virginia

A Moon man accused of killing his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend in September was arrested this morning in Charleston, W. Va. , according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Members of the Fugitive Task Force in Western Pennsylvania and Southern District of West Virginia arrested 28-year-old Jesse Lee Jones, without incident around 7:30 a.m. at a residence in the 1500 block of Jackson Street, the marshals service said today. Jones is charged with the shooting death of 22-year-old Cameron Johnson of Coraopolis around 6:40 p.m. Sept. 23 in the 200 block of Juniper Drive. Police say they found Johnson dead from at least one gunshot wound in a vehicle that had crashed into a tree. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic violence incident. County police charged Jones with homicide and other charges and he had been on the run since then.

Five Hospitalized After Collision in Lawrence County

Four people were injured in a collision between a vehicle and a truck Sunday afternoon in Lawrence County. According to police, the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on Mt. Herman Church Road in Slippery Rock Township and hit the pickup truck, which was towing a trailer full of Christmas trees. Police say after the collision, the pickup truck rolled on its roof and the trailer traveled about 500 feet down the highway. The vehicle went into a parking lot of a repair shop and hit a school bus that was there to be fixed. According to police, all four people in the vehicle were trapped and were transported to area hospitals. The truck driver was not seriously hurt, but was also hospitalized. Police are investigating.

State Budget Deal Hits A Snag

How Pennsylvania funds it schools is in the balance as it appears a state budget deal could be unraveling. Senate Republicans suggest they can’t get the votes for a sales tax hike to counter an end to school property taxes.

State House Approves New Alcohol Privatization Measure

State House members have approved a new alcohol privatization measure that isn’t significantly different from a measure vetoed by Governor Tom Wolf in June. House Republicans have made the issue a priority, with some form of privatization possible as part of a state budget deal.

Ambridge Area School District Approves ‘Chicago’ as High School Musical

The Ambridge Area School District has approved ‘Chicago’ as the high school musical for next spring. This decision follows a week of controversy…after several complaints and concerns from parents were made known regarding the musical’s content. Some felt that ‘Chicago’s script and costuming are not age appropriate for a high school audience. In interview with Beaver County Radio’s Pat Septak, Dr. Joe D’Impario, the acting superintendent of schools in Ambridge, said the administration met with the musical’s director last night and came to an agreement, in which the show will go on as planned, but with some conditions, namely toning down the dialogue and costuming in the production. ‘Chicago’ will be presented at Ambridge Area High School March 10th through the 13th.

Car Crashes Into Rochester Township House

Police in Rochester Township are investigating after a car crashed into a township house late last night. The incident happened at around 9:30 at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Grant Street. According to police, an inexperienced driver slid off the road, overcorrected and slid onto a telephone pole and a house in the 700 block of Virginia Avenue. Three injured juveniles who were all riding in the car were taken to Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital as a precaution. Police say no one inside the house was hurt.

Raids in New Castle Target Illegal Trafficking of Guns, Drugs

Authorities executed several search warrants today in the New Castle area as part of a multi-month investigation into the illegal trafficking of guns and drugs. According to the New Caste Police Department Facebook page, one of the raids was executed at a home on Bleakley Avenue. Officers with the New Castle City Police Department, the Union Township Police Department and the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Special Investigative Unit seized nearly $19,000 in cash, several weapons and suspected cocaine and marijuana. Authorities arrested 31-year-old Maurice “Trell” Moore, who is originally from Mississippi, in the home. Moore is facing several charges. Search warrants were also executed at residences on Hamilton Avenue, East Home Street and Pin Oak Drive.

Spike in Gun Permits Being Reported Across the State

Some Pennsylvania counties say they’ve seen a jump in people applying for gun permits in the days following the Paris terror attacks. In Allegheny County, the sheriff’s office made a Facebook post asking people not to call the office because it’s been so swamped with requests.
