3a GIRLS AVONWORTH 54 BEAVER FALLS 32

Beaver Falls had a 9-2 lead early before Avonworth went on a 27-7 run on their way to a 54-33 win in the WPIAL 3a girls first round game at Cardinal Wherle High School Wednesday night.  With the win,  the Antelopes advance to the quarter finals against East Allegheny.  The Tigers end the season 10-12.

 

Beaver County Commissioners’ Work Session Centers On Creating Another Source Of Income For County

Beaver County weights and measures manager Ron Zuccarro met with the commissioners for specifics on a new registration fee for scales and fuel pumps. According to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti, Zuccarro says there are 60 fuel stations in the county with 1,248 dispensers for gasoline grades. The new county fee will be 35 dollars per dispenser. Zuccarro says there are 84 stores with 461 scales in the county and the new registration fee will be 30 dollars per scale. Zuccarro will do the billing and collections. The commissioners have to adopt a resolution setting the fee schedule.

Bridgewater Council Approves Docking Fee

It will cost boaters an extra 25 dollars to park at a Bridgewater borough dock starting in January 2018. The vote was unanimous. Borough council approved the controversial docking fee last night by a vote of four-nothing. About 50 boaters and residents showed up in council chambers during the beginning of last night’s meeting in protest.

Aliquippa Brush Fire and Power Outage Under Investigation

A cell phone caller alerted Aliquippa Fire Department of a brush fire between 1st Ave. and the hillside behind St. Titus Church at 1:30 p.m., according to Fire Capt. Bill Brucker. Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano reports that a  blown transformer knocked out power on Franklin Ave.Brucker said the brush fire could have been responsible. Capt. Brucker said the fire was put out quickly, the cause is undetermined.

New Development In Hopewell Twp.

Hopewell township Zoning Hearing Board approved a request from Kelar Properties LLC   owners of Washington Street Apartments  last night   for variances to build 6 townhouses on the existing property. this year.  According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, the units will  have 2 bedrooms and 1/12 baths Zoning board, co owner Phil Laird told the board .chairman Dan Maravich  said that residents have 30 days to appeal the decision if they aren’t in favor of the development.    The owners Phil Laird and Ed Keller told the board that they plan to build 18 more units in the future. Mr. Laird said   2 18 unit apartments are located  on the 3.3 acre site.  The men purchased the site last year from Glen Wells of Pittsburgh..

Penguins Handle Hurricanes In Raleigh

Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby combined for 10 penalty minutes last night, but they also scored a goal a piece (including the GWG by Crosby), and the Penguins broke their 2-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The Penguins (37-14-8) also got a goal from Scott Wilson, and Matt Murray stopped 29 shots in the victory. Jeff Skinner’s 20th goal of the year was the only tally for the Hurricanes (24-24-8). Pittsburgh returns to action Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers at Heinz Field.

3A Girls’ Basketball Playoffs Begin On Beaver County Radio Tonight

The first round of the 3A Girls’ playoffs in the WPIAL Basketball Championships takes place tonight. #10 Beaver Falls (10-11) takes on #7 Avonworth (14-8) at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School tonight; pre-game is set for 6:05 on Beaver County Radio, and tip-off is at 6:30.

Two other local girls’ teams begin their championship bidding tonight in the 3A playoffs:

#8 Riverside (17-5) battles #9 Brownsville (10-11) at Peters Township HS [8:00pm]

#12 South Side Beaver (11-11) looks to upset #5 Carlynton (15-6) at North Hills HS [6:30pm]

Man Killed In Car Crash In Hanover Twp

Another fatal accident in Beaver County. Police say a Hookstown man was killed Monday when the car he was driving through the intersection of Kendall Road and State Route 168 in Hanover Township….struck an embankment. State police in Beaver say 56-year-old Michael Stroud died at the scene of the accident. Police are investigating what caused the crash.

AMBRIDGE MAN FACING CHILD LURING CHARGES

A man is facing charges for allegedly trying to lure young girls into his car in Ambridge. Kurtis Netherland was arrested over the weekend and is accused of approaching two girls, ages 11 and 12,  and asking if they wanted to get in his vehicle and make some money. Netherland is a delivery driver and was at Economy Village on company time when the alleged incident was caught on security cameras. Netherland later confessed but claims he was just joking around with the girls.
