State Rep. Schemel Proposes Alternative Method To Address Child Sex Abuse

Governor Tom Wolf is pushing state lawmakers to pass several bills recommended by a grand jury that investigated child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Current PA law doesn’t allow a victim to sue once they turn 30-years-old. A Berks County state representative is suggesting opening a two-year window in which older victims could sue abusers as well as institutions. State Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Franklin) unveiled a proposal to provide an alternative to civil lawsuits when addressing child sex abuse cases. Schemel’s proposal would create a “Truth and Restoration Commission” that would receive testimony from victims and the institutions who may have harbored those responsible for the abuse.
