Trump and his allies lobbed fresh assaults on the proceedings, which they dismiss as a hoax and a sham. Democrats said the facts are not in dispute: They say Trump put himself above the nation as he pressed the president of Ukraine to investigate Democratic rivals at the same time the U.S. was withholding crucial military aid. Republicans derided the Democrats’ effort, saying it was merely their attempt to remove Trump from office because they cannot beat him in next November’s election.
