(Pittsburgh, PA) Pennsylvania has reduced the minimum seizure-free period required for people with epilepsy to resume driving from six months to three months.

The change, which took effect March 28th, brings the state’s policy in line with recommendations from the American Epilepsy Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

For years, Pennsylvania required individuals with epilepsy to be seizure-free for at least six months before regaining driving privileges, a standard that differed from national medical guidelines.

Dr. Andrea Synowiec, System Vice Chair for the Department of Neurology at Allegheny Health Network and a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Medical Advisory Board, was among those involved in discussions surrounding the update.
