(Aliquippa, PA) An Aliquippa police officer overdosed after handling narcotics from the department’s evidence room, according to Beaver County District Attorney Nate Bible.
Bible said the officer collapsed inside a patrol car and was revived with Narcan and CPR.
Investigators are now reviewing whether proper protocols were followed while the drugs were being handled. At this time, Bible said there is no indication a crime was committed and no charges have been filed.
The officer, who serves as the department’s evidence custodian, told KDKA that he had been helping destroy old narcotics in the evidence room before the incident occurred.
According to investigators, the officer was wearing gloves, but authorities believe he may still have come into contact with fentanyl.
The officer said he changed clothes after handling the narcotics and later got into a patrol car with his partner. About 20 minutes later, he lost consciousness.
His partner administered Narcan twice before paramedics arrived. The officer later regained consciousness at a hospital and said he had no memory of collapsing.
The officer has since returned to work and said he feels fortunate to have survived.
