Bob Barrickman Previews The PIAA Football Semifinals

Two teams that have claimed WPIAL gold for Beaver County will take their shot tonight in making one step closer to obtaining PIAA gold.

Bob Barrickman joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to preview the two games tonight–Central Valley vs. Central (Martinsburg) and Aliquippa vs. Jersey Shore–that feature the two top teams in Beaver County looking to prove that they are the best in the state as well. The Central Valley/Central game will be on Beaver County Radio tonight with a 6:30 pregame and a 7:00 kickoff.

Central Valley enters their match with a 13-0 record for 2021 and a 25-game winning streak overall, tying the all-time Beaver County record. Their last game was a victory in the Class 3A WPIAL Championship over North Catholic at Heinz Field by a 52-15 decision. Central (Martinsburg) enters the game with a 14-0 record following a 35-6 win over Grove City last week.

Aliquippa is the only team of the four aforementioned schools with a loss this season at 11-1; that loss being to Central Valley back on September 10 by a score of 21-12. Since then the Quips haven’t missed, winning ten straight including last week’s 28-13 victory over Belle Vernon to secure the Class 4A WPIAL Championship. Jersey Shore comes into their match with the Quips following a 30-6 win over Meadville, holding a record of 14-0 on the year.

If both teams win tonight, as Barrickman points out, it’ll be the first time since 2002 that multiple teams from Beaver County have made it to Hershey, when Hopewell and Rochester took the trip 19 years ago. The Beaver Valley has had at least one team represented at Hershey each year since 2014, with Central Valley making three appearances during that span (2014, 2019, 2020) and Aliquippa appearing twice (2015, 2018).

Court Hears Debate Over accused Synagogue Shooter’s Words

Friday, December 3, at 7:51 AM
By MARK SCOLFORO Associated Press
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Pittsburgh synagogue massacre defendant’s statements at the scene and at a hospital should be allowed at trial because concerns about public safety were a valid reason to question him even after he’d asked for an attorney. U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose is considering whether to grant Robert Bowers’ request to suppress statements made after he had been shot and was being treated. His lawyers say Bowers’ repeated assertion of his rights to remain silent and to confer with a lawyer should mean his statements can’t be used against him. Bowers is accused of killing 11 in October 2018 in what is the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

NEW YORK (AP) — The omicron variant of COVID-19 has been discovered in at least five states, showing yet again how mutations of the virus can circumnavigate the globe with speed and ease. Just a day after the first known U.S. case was found in California, tests showed Thursday the omicron variant had infected at least five people in the New York City metropolitan area, plus a man from Minnesota who had attended an anime convention in Manhattan in late November. Officials reported another case in a Colorado woman who had recently traveled to southern Africa. The variant was also confirmed in an unvaccinated Hawaii resident with no recent travel history.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has passed a stopgap spending bill that avoids a short-term shutdown and funds the federal government through Feb. 18 after leaders defused a partisan standoff over federal vaccine mandates. The measure now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Earlier in the day, congressional leaders announced they had finally reached an agreement to keep the government running for 11 more weeks, generally at current spending levels, while adding $7 billion to aid Afghanistan evacuees. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he is “glad that in the end, cooler heads prevailed.”

Gov. Wolf Adds to Mounting Veto Tally, Kills Permitless-Gun Bill

By MARC LEVY Associated Press
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Wolf has followed through on his veto threat and rejected Republican-penned legislation to allow people to carry a firearm openly or concealed, without a permit. The veto Thursday adds to his total for Pennsylvania’s chief executive with the most vetoes in more than four decades. Wolf, a Democrat, called the bill “dangerous.” According to online state records, Wolf has penned his 52nd veto with 13 months left in his second term. That’s more than any other governor since Milton Shapp, who left office in 1979. Wolf passed Democrat Robert P. Casey, who had 50 vetoes. The Legislature has never overridden a Wolf veto.

Aaron Bernstine Provides Update On Hereford Manor Lake In Zelienople

“They were the top two trout fishing lakes in all of Pennsylvania.”

The lakes, as described by PA State Representative Aaron Bernstine (District 10), are the Hereford Manor lakes in the Zelienople/Harmony area right outside Beaver County. Bernstine spoke with Matt Drzik on the December 2 edition of A.M. Beaver County to provide an update on the restoration process of Hereford Manor; a project that Bernstine has made a focal point since his election to Harrisburg in 2016.

“I think our best shot at this,” Bernstine spoke, “is to work with our federal partners and to funnel the finances.” During the interview, Bernstine made no secret that the road to restore Hereford Manor would be difficult if it had to detour through Harrisburg, where getting the approval votes seems a difficult task.

It was also reiterated by Bernstine that the restoration of the lakes would also be a restoration of the surrounding area. “That’s the thing that excites me about this whole thing,” he stated, “[is that] people have gotten closer to the outdoors…a lot of those different opportunities [will be] here, should we be able to get this project to move forward eventually.”
