VIDEO: Community Fundraising & Christmas Planning With Beaver Falls Mayor Kenya Johns

(Matt Drzik/Beaver County Radio)

“It’s a beautiful place with beautiful people, and when you get the right people here in a space where they feel like they can add…they want to stay, and they want to be here.”

Mayor Kenya Johns’ description of the city of Beaver Falls has perpetuated her first year in office; a year that is now entering its final–and perhaps busiest–quarter of activity. Johns joined Matt Drzik on the September 13 edition of A.M. Beaver County to discuss the city’s continued foray into improving the city, as well as upcoming events taking place in Beaver Falls.

One of the nearest events for the city is the upcoming Neighborhood North Community Fundraiser on Tuesday, September 20. “We want this to be a community effort,” Johns stated about the event. “We might not all have $500 or $1,000 to donate, but if we have five dollars, we can do that…or if we have the ability to share it on social media so someone else with five dollars might be able to share, we really want the community to show up for that.” Johns said that the funds raised will help for kids’ activities at Neighborhood North during the wintertime.

Speaking of wintertime, the city is also in its early stages of planning the annual Christmas parade along 7th Avenue in Beaver Falls. Johns hopes that this year’s parade manages to balance good traditions with good new ideas to create the best presentation. “I am incredibly honored to be able to be a part of the planning committee,” she said. “We don’t want to bring it back; we want to reinvent it. We want to take all the elements of what we’ve done in the past that’s been beautiful and amazing, and also have a future focus on that.” Those interested in participating in the 2022 Christmas Parade can contact the city for further details.

Among the propositions released to the public were the approval for six individuals to be candidates for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, all of whom were selected unopposed. Also on the Monday night agenda were the pending approvals of the Elementary School Parent Compact and its Middle School equivalent for Title 1 of the 2022-23 school year. Two school trips–the Middle School trip to Washington D.C. from May 24-26 and the High School Band trip to Walt Disney World from March 26 to April 1–were also submitted for approval, with the cost of the trips to be made by the students and/or parental fundraising. Superintendent Joseph Guarino said that the Band Trip particularly was still in its stages of finalizing costs for its trip to Orlando. The price of an adult breakfast for the 2022-23 school year will be revised to $2.10 per meal, pending approval by the board.

All motions will be voted on at the second meeting–the voting meeting–by the school board on September 26. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 PM at the “Little Theatre” in the New Brighton High School.

High Court Tells Gov. Wolf It Won’t Fast Track Amendments Lawsuit

(File Photo of Pa. Supreme Court)

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s highest court has rejected a request from Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf to immediately take up his challenge to Republican legislation that has bundled a constitutional amendment regarding abortion with four unrelated proposed changes. In turning down Wolf’s request on Monday, the justices said he was free to file a legal action before the lower-level Commonwealth Court. The amendments could go before voters as early as May. Wolf argues the bill violates a constitutional rule against passing laws that address multiple, unrelated topics. The proposed abortion amendment would say the state constitution doesn’t guarantee any rights relating to abortion or public funding of abortions.
