Second Baseman Dee Gordon of the Miami Marlins was suspended over night by Major League Baseball for 80 games. Gordon violated the P.E.D. policy of major league baseball.

Changes On The Way At Beaver Falls City Building
Some big changes are being made at the Beaver Falls City Building. Mayor George Quay tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that Police Chief Charles Jones is retiring on June 3rd. He will be moving into the position of City Manager in Beaver Falls. The current city manager – Steve Johnson – will be moving into the code department…and he will be in charge of tearing down blighted buildings in the city. The new police chief (taking Chief Jones spot) will be John Delucca. Quay tells us that these three player changes will take place on June 3rd.
Sparks Expected To Fly At Tonight’s Blackhawk School Board Meeting
Sparks are expected to fly at tonight’s Blackhawk School Board meeting. The board is considering layoffs and program cuts to help bring the district budget into line. The board meet tonight at 7:30 at the Blackhawk High School auditorium. Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti will there and will have reports during the news on AM Beaver County beginning at 6:30 Thursday morning.
Chippewa Residents May See Big Rate Increase in Electric Bills
A 10.5 percent rate increase could affect customers of West Penn Power starting in January. The company recently announced plans to ask the Pennsylvania Utility Commission for permission to increase this rate in order to fund infrastructure improvement and help mitigate lower electricity consumption. This increase would come after last year’s 13 percent increase, which company officials say is a result of nearly 20 years of unchanged rates. In addition, customers of Penn Power could also see their rate increase by 13 percent. Many Chippewa Township residents are customers of West Penn Power.
State Investigating 2 Quakes Near New Castle Fracking Site
Did fracking contribute to two small earthquakes near a New Castle drilling operation? That’s what the state Department of Environment Protection is investigating today. DEP spokeswoman Melanie Williams says Hilcorp Energy Co. stopped fracking at the Mahoning Township site at around noon on Monday. That was about 12 hours after the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude-1.9 earthquake and about 10 hours before another quake of the same size was recorded. Williams says Hilcorp was fracking two wells on a four-well pad about 45 miles west of Pittsburgh when the first quake occurred. There were no reports of property damage.

Beaver County Bonds Are Refinanced
The Beaver County Commissioners held their work session Wednesday morning in preparation for Thursday’s regular commissioners meeting. Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti reports that the commissioners received a report from budget director Ricardo Luckow that says the county has refinanced its bonds to a total of 115-million dollars with revenues projected through the year 2032. The immediate budget relief for this year is 6.7-million dollars with 1.6-million dollars in revenues for next year.
Rossi Tells Beaver County Radio News He’s Very Confident He Can Beat Christiana in November
Michael Rossi says he’s very confident that he can beat Republican Jim Christiana in the fall. That’s what he told Beaver County Radio News this morning after winning the Democratic nomination for the 15th Legislative District. Rossi defeated Dennis Nichols in Tuesday’s Pennsylvania Primary, despite Nichols’ allegations that Rossi was a “political plant” in the primary race, a charge that Rossi has strongly denied.
Bernstine Wins in 10th Legislative District
Lawrence County resident Aaron Bernstine emerged from a three-way race to easily capture the Republican nomination in the 10th Legislative District. If the results hold as expected, Bernstine will take on incumbent Democratic State Representative Jaret Gibbons in the general election. Gibbons was unopposed in the primary.
