Beaver Valley Choral Society Working On “God Of Our Fathers” Spring Project

The Beaver Valley Choral Society is going virtual once again this spring–and they’re looking to bring the house down.

Sharon Burchill, who is the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for the BVCS, joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to discuss “God Of Our Fathers”, the project that will bring dozens of musicians together virtually to create an ensemble recording of the Daniel C. Roberts-penned song.

Burchill explained the spiritual draw to choosing this piece for the BVCS to perform, from the recovery undertones in lieu of the current state of living in 2021, to the concurrence of using a piece initially written for the United States centennial, now being used to acknowledge the Choral Society’s own 100th Anniversary.

“God Of Our Fathers” is still a work in progress, however, and Burchill acknowledged that the BVCS is still looking for musicians to participate in the virtual ensemble as either a singer or instrumentalist. Full details on participation protocol and fees can be found by clicking here. Deadline to submit material is May 10, and the project will be released Memorial Day Weekend.

INTERVIEW: The Women’s Center Of Beaver County Provides Flexible Therapy And Counseling For Abuse Victims

Those who struggle with trauma stemming from past or current experiences in domestic disputes usually also struggle with finding a path towards recovery. They may feel that there is a financial burden or several restrictions that could hinder their push towards comfort and safety.

Jodie McGovern, therapist with the Women’s Center Of Beaver County.

That’s where the Women’s Center Of Beaver County comes into play.

Jodie McGovern, a therapist at the Women’s Center, joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to talk about the therapy services that are provided by the Center, which is financially covered under the “umbrella” provided by the government so that those seeking counseling may achieve it without suffering any financial setbacks they may be unable to match.

Just as important as the financial flexibility is the empathic flexibility of the therapists and counselors at the Women’s Center. McGovern spoke about how there are no restrictions on how much trauma one has experienced or how much time they need to recover, nor is there a limit on age or gender for those seeking a starting point towards returning to a safe and comfortable lifestyle.

McGovern also talked about the different types of one-on-one and group therapy provided by the Women’s Center, including evidence-based session types like EMDR and PCIT, to activity-based session types such as music therapy and equine therapy that can allow victims of abuse to regain physiological control of their bodies and their minds.

The Women’s Center Of Beaver County has a 24/7 hotline for contact at (724)-775-0131, and they have further information at their website.

AUDIO: Geneva Football Ready To Kick Off Season Unlike Any Other

The snow is gone, the flowers are blooming, and spring is in the air. In the sports world, that means it’s time for…college football?!

Strange as it may be, the football season begins for the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes on March 26, several months after the season was supposed to begin before the pandemic cancelled the majority of sports activity in 2020. The team kicks off its reduced spring season tonight against Westminster at Reeves Field beginning at 7:30 (pregame at 7:00 on Beaver County Radio).

Before the game, head coach Geno DeMarco sat down with Matt Drzik to talk about his 28th season as the sideline general of the Golden Tornadoes, a season he knows is going to be unlike any other. Coach DeMarco talked about the players he sees as key components to victory in the shortened five-game season, the motivation for players to even play such a short schedule on the verge of the end of the semester, the connection that Geneva College has and hopes to maintain with Beaver County talent, and the perseverance that comes with enduring not just a football season…but one within the confines of a ongoing global crisis.
