Beaver County Radio is celebrating its 74th birthday tomorrow (four years after that photo was taken), and Matt Drzik will be talking about some of the highlights of the last 74 years on A.M. Beaver County Wednesday morning.

“It’s almost like an introduction to networking, and to build those life skills.”
Such were the words of Lauren Zemcik, who is the Vice President of Operations for the Beaver County YMCA headquartered on Junction Stretch in New Brighton. The “Y” is gearing up for a summer that includes the Summer Playgrounds program, the Summer Camps program, operating the Ellwood City Veterans’ Pool, and the Summer Food Programs…among many more.
The Summer Playgrounds program in particular incorporates multiple boroughs throughout Beaver County, allowing kids to participate in many different available activities. “They’ll do structured activities,” Zemcik said, “[such as] kickball, crafts, or STEM stuff…our counselors come with a gigantic bin full of stuff, including a first aid kit.” The Summer Playgrounds program runs from June 13 to August 5 with hours from 10 AM to 2 PM, and further details about activities and participation can be found by calling the Beaver County YMCA at (724) 891-8439.
The YMCA is also hosting Summer Camps running from June 13 until August 19 (full details can be seen here), and they’re also bringing back Camp Rise (formerly Camp Achieva) for school-aged children with disabilities. They will also be holding lifeguard training in three day-long sessions from June 13 to June 15, and the Summer Food Program will once again be available for kids up through Age 18.

On Tuesday’s edition of A.M. Beaver County, Lauren Zemcik–the Vice President of Operations at the Beaver County YMCA–joins Matt Drzik at 8:35 to talk about the upcoming summer programs offered by the Y.

The “they” in that quote, from Kelly Cope of Patriot Home Care, are the caregivers and independent living assistants who work with their patients in the Patriot Home Care program. Cope joined Matt Drzik on the May 23 edition of A.M. Beaver County to discuss the ins and outs of the assisted independent living programs that Patriot Home Care offers.

“We try to make it as fun as possible, and make it exciting…things that people want to actually go and do.”
The Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls will be hosting a series of summer events over the next several weeks as school begins to let out and the sun stays out longer into the evening. Director Rachel Crisci (who spoke the quote from earlier) joined Matt Drzik on the May 20 edition of A.M. Beaver County to talk about those events, all of which benefit the library and the Beaver County Libraries System.
The first of those events is on May 20, which is an oldies dance at the Patterson Township Fire Hall at 7:00 PM featuring guest Rudy Zetz. The following day will be the Kick-Off for their Summer Reading Series with the theme “Oceans Of Possibilities” starting at 11:00 AM. On top of that are regularly scheduled weekly activities at the library: “We do Story Times during the week Tuesdays at 10:30 & 3:30,” Crisci stated, “and then we always try to do a program on Saturday for those who can’t get there during the week.”
The library’s biggest event of the summer, however–at least for the adults–is about a month away. The Designer Purse Bash will be held on June 26 at Shakespeare’s in Ellwood City from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM with proceeds from the prizes, raffles, and ticket sales heading to the Carnegie Free Library. “It is such a good time, and we always have such a good turnout,” Crisci added. “We try to make our fundraisers fun.”

After four years of prayer and adjustment, the First Baptist Church has finally found a foundation for their services.
The new facility will be located at 370 Third Street in Beaver, and will be holding a dedication ceremony on May 29 at 3:00 PM, preceded by an open house that begins at 2:00 PM. The pastor of First Baptist Church, Reverend Cordell Fountain, talked with Matt Drzik on the May 20 edition of A.M. Beaver County to discuss the journey that the church and its congregation has went on in the last few years.
The original building had been destroyed by a fire in 2018, and the search to find a permanent home had been marred by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Through continued faith and perseverance, though, the new facility will allow the congregate to worship once again. “I just accredit the Lord for going before us,” Rev. Fountain said, “because we didn’t know what we were going to do. But we had faith, and the Lord led to this place…and we just believe that was his doing.”

“I’m confident that we’re going to have a number of teams that make a serious run.”
Those words were spoken by Beaver County Radio sports director Bob Barrickman on the May 19 edition of A.M. Beaver County, as he spoke with Matt Drzik about the 2022 WPIAL Baseball and Softball Playoffs that started earlier this week.
Several area teams are in the postseason conversation; the top two might be the Beaver softball team–currently on a 37-game winning streak dating back to the beginning of the 2021 season–and the Hopewell baseball team, who entered the playoffs as the #1 seed in Class 3A. Both the Viking boys and Bobcat ladies are looking to repeat as WPIAL champions following titles in 2021.
It’s not just those two, however–as of the interview, there were still 12 teams in the coverage area remaining between the two brackets. Blackhawk, Beaver, Quaker Valley, Hopewell, New Brighton, Riverside, OLSH, and Rochester remain in the WPIAL Baseball playoffs, while Beaver, Ellwood City, OLSH, and South Side Beaver are still active in the WPIAL Playoffs. “I would be surprised if we don’t get at least a couple of teams to the championships,” Barrickman said, “the way that these early-round playoffs are going thus far.”

The United Way of Beaver County will be celebrating another year of excellence in charity and hard work with their 7th Annual Recognition Dinner on Thursday, June 9 at the Club at Shadow Lakes in Aliquippa. The event begins at 6:00 PM and will recognize some of the top contributing organizations over the last year.
Director Mike Rubino joined Matt Drzik on the May 18 edition of A.M. Beaver County to discuss the annual celebration, which is returning to early June after having been postponed until September during 2021. “Last year, over 100,000 people by United Way dollars in Beaver County,” Rubino said. “And that’s because of the generosity of our resdients.”
The awards will recognize several organizations who have managed to remain poised to fulfill their selfless missions throughout the last year, including the Cornerstone of Beaver County, Gateway Rehabilitation Center, and Styropek. There will also be the revealing of the final total for the Matching Grant campaign–a campaign that is still running through the end of May. Donations can be made by going to the United Way of Beaver County website.
