NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell broadly on Wall Street and Treasury yields rose after another hot reading on the job market raised worries that the Federal Reserve will need to continue inflicting pain on the economy in order to fight inflation. The S&P 500 was down 1.2% in afternoon trading Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the the Nasdaq also fell. The pullback came after payroll company ADP reported a bigger-than-expected increase in jobs at private companies last month. The continued strength in the job market makes the Fed’s job of reining in inflation more difficult by putting upward pressure on wages.

Born in 1907, Hendricks was alive to witness news of the sinking of the Titanic, World War I and II, the Great Depression and both the Spanish flu and COVID-19 pandemics.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says the U.S. will immediately begin turning away Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who cross the border from Mexico illegally. It’s his boldest move yet to confront spiraling arrivals of migrants since he took office two years ago. The new rules expand on an existing effort to stop Venezuelans attempting to enter the U.S., which led to a dramatic drop in Venezuelans coming to the U.S. border. Together the changes represent a major revision to immigration rules that will stand even if the U.S. Supreme Court ends a Trump-era public health law that allows American authorities to turn away asylum seekers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House stalemate over choosing a new speaker is continuing. Kevin McCarthy is determined to win over enough fellow Republicans, but he failed again on Thursday. This is Day 3 of the standoff between McCarthy and 20 olleagues who are withholding the support the California Republican needs. So far, seven roll call votes have failed to elect a speaker. The impasse has left the House unable to fully form and govern. McCarthy’s conservative detractors appear intent on waiting him out, as long as it takes.

Pennsylvania Sen. Casey to undergo prostate cancer surgery

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania says he’ll undergo surgery for prostate cancer, but is expected to make a full recovery. The 62-year-old Casey said in a statement Thursday that he was diagnosed last month. He says the news came as a shock, but he says he has an excellent prognosis and is confident that treatment will allow him to continue working in the U.S. Senate “with minimal disruption.” Casey is serving his third term. He hasn’t said whether he will run for a fourth term in 2024, a year when Democrats face a difficult Senate map.
