Blackhawk Girls, Lincoln Park Boys Advance In PIAA Playoffs

The Lincoln Park Boys and Blackhawk Girls advanced to the second round of the PIAA playoffs at Fox Chapel HS on Beaver County Radio Friday Night.

The Lady Cougars advanced with a 53-32 victory over the Freeport Lady Yellowjackets in the 4A Girls’ bracket. Freeport went on an 11-0 run to begin the second half, but the Cougars responded to finish off the Yellowjackets for the second time this postseason.

Blackhawk will now play Villa Maria in the second round. Mady Aulbach (Blackhawk) and Kim Mixon (Freeport) were selected as the CCBC Players of The Game.

Meanwhile Lincoln Park overcame an early battle to wear out Juniata and win going away by a score of 70-39. Nelly Cummings shot a 3-pointer early in the 4th to surpass Brandon Fuss-Cheatham as the leading scorer in Beaver County history.

The Leopards’ Tom Melanja and the Indians’ Ben Lauver were selected as the CCBC Players of The Game.

Spring Forward – Daylight Savings Time Begins Sunday

Time will jump forward this weekend as the annual Daylight Saving Time period begins at 2 a-m Sunday. Residents should turn their clocks ahead one hour before they go to bed Saturday night. Daylight Saving Time will run until November 5th. Safety experts recommend that people use this clock shift as a reminder to also check batteries in their smoke detectors.

Christiana Talks About His Call For Inquiry Into Split With Gateway on Beaver County Radio’s Teleforum

Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Center Township previously contracted with Beaver County to provide drug and alcohol treatment services. State Representative Jim Christiana made headlines this week when he announced that he was seeking an inquiry into the contract dispute between the county and Gateway Rehab and the effects that the dispute has had on county residents who need treatment for addiction. Christiana told Frank Sparks on Teleforum Friday morning that he’ll do whatever it takes to bring the two sides together again so they can resume negotiations.

Beaver Falls Man Found Not Guilty In 2013 Slaying

A BEAVER COUNTY JURY HAS ACQUITTED A BEAVER FALLS MAN IN THE 2013 SHOOTING DEATH OF HIS LONGTIME FRIEND. 40-YEAR-OLD ERIC WASHINGTON WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON IN THE KILLING OF 45-YEAR-OLD JEROME GOOSBY OF BEAVER FALLS. GOOSBY WAS SHOT AND KILLED OUTSIDE THE BRIGHTON PIONEER ELKS CLUB IN THE 600 BLOCK OF SEVENTH STREET IN THE CITY. THE JURY DELIBERATED JUST TWO HOURS BEFORE REACHING THE VERDICT.

‘”WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE?”

Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano reports that a  health expo entitled:WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE”?  is being held at the CCBC Dome tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m., according to Bob Catley, communications outreach coordinator for Hertitage Valley.  Catley said in a phone interview the event has been in the works for 4 months.  Approximately 100 vendors will be on hand, free food and product samples, and fitness and xooking demos will be featured. Man, 91, Shot & Killed During Lawrence Co. Standoff

A 91-year-old man is dead after a standoff in Lawrence County ended with a police-involved shooting. Police were called to the home on Spring Street in Union Township after a woman said her uncle fired a shot at her. After a more than three-and-a-half hour standoff, police say Frank Wratny confronted New Castle Police with a gun from the front door. Officers shot Wratny and he died at the scene. State police are handling the investigation.

A 180-ACRE PLOT OF LAND NEAR ROUTE 51 IN CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP COULD SOON BE HOME TO A MAJOR RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT. OFFICIALS SAY THE DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE SANDWICHED BETWEEN ROUTE 51 AND 37TH STREET…AND WOULD INCLUDE 200 HOMES, A LARGE RETAIL STORE, THREE RESTAURANTS, TWO STRIP MALLS AND A HOTEL. NO TIMELINE HAS BEEN GIVEN ON WHEN FORMAL PLANS WILL BE SUBMITTED.

CCBC Named To PA Business Central’s Top 100 List

Spencer Myers, editor of the Pennsylvania Business Central has announced the Community College of Beaver County  has been named  to its Top 100 organizations list for 2017, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano.  The publication serves 23 counties..  This honor is in recognition of the college’s  contributions it has made to community and economic development . The publication receives nominations from readers and consults with chambers of commerce to gather a pool of candidates  for the top 100  list .  The paper’s editorial board selects the final 100. The Upper Ohio River Navigation Project Update

The Upper Ohio River Navigation Project  which includes  replacing existing  auxillary lock chambers on the Dashield, Emsworth and Montgomery Dams has not begun because funding has not been  appropriated, according to Marc Glowcezewski from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Pittsburgh . According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, Glowcezewski said once the funding is released  the lock chambers will be modernized to make them more efficient for  vessels passing through the small chambers on the Ohio River. Glowcezewski said the  new auxillary chambers will be constructed next to the existing ones  to increase efficiency and  the capacity  on the water. The  new chambers will   alsoGlowcezewski said   provide safe and  reliable navigation on the Upper Ohio River.
