Vazquez In, Dickerson Out of 2018 All-Star Game

Last year he was Felipe Rivero. This year he is Felipe Vazquez, All-Star pitcher.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ closer earned his first bid to the Midsummer Classic and will join the National League staff for the July 17 game at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. Vazquez is 7th in the NL with 18 saves, has a 3-2 record, and leads the Bucs with 12.29 strikeouts per 9 innings.

Vazquez is the Pirates’ lone representative at the 2018 All-Star game. Corey Dickerson was left out despite being 8th in the National League with a .308 batting average. He is joined by Albert Almora Jr. from the Cubs (2nd) and Milwaukee’s Jesus Aguilar (9th) as top-10 hitters not to be voted into the game.

Meanwhile, former Pirate pitchers Gerrit Cole of Houston and J.A. Happ of the Toronto Blue Jays were voted in as starters on the American League roster. Cole is 9-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his first season outside of Pittsburgh. Andrew McCutchen was not voted in to the All-Star game in first year with the Giants, missing out for the third consecutive season.

The overall leading vote-getter was Astros 2B Jose Altuve, with 4.8 million votes.
