Pirates Brass Answer Questions At Affiliate Meetings.

(Seven Springs, PA) Pittsburgh Pirates front office staff members, Neil Huntington and Frank Coonley, hosted a lively question and answer session this morning at the annual Pirates Radio Network affiliate meetings held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, PA.   Among other topics discussed were how the team is going to focus on becoming a better hitting ball club at the plate.  Huntington offered: “If you are a bad ball hitter, you are a bad hitter”,  implying that a point of emphasis for the upcoming season was going to be to improve player’s discipline to wait for a good pitch during their at bats.   Coonley and Huntington both stressed how important it is going to be to improve the team’s overall offensive output.

One of the goals the Pirates have this year is to is to bring more people back to the ballpark to watch the games.  In response to last year’s disappointing attendance, Frank Coonley said:  “It’s on me.  We were not able to sell our vision.  I’m not mad at the fans.   We needed to do things and we needed to get better. We traded our best player (this past season) and our best pitcher.  We needed to get back from 78 wins to 82 wins.  We needed to get younger and we needed to get more talented.  Fans were angry with us, even though it’s what we needed to do.”   Huntington and Coonley both agreed and offered that winning fans’ trust, and getting them back to P.N.C. Park was a top priority for this year.

Pirates owner, Bob Nutting,  hosted a dinner and reception in the Matterhorn lounge for all the Pirates Network affiliate stations. The event also served as a chance for all those in attendance to get a final conversation and picture taken with legendary Pirates pitcher and announcer, Steve Blass, who was in attendance as well.  recently it was announced that this upcoming year will be the last before Blass retires from the booth.

Pirates baseball regular season begins on March 28, 2018 at Cincinnati.  WBVP and WMBA will again this year carry Pirates Baseball broadcasts.

Icy conditions were a surprise

PennDOT officials say the trouble spots this morning have been southern Allegheny County and northern Beaver County.

“Right around 5 o’clock, we got a flash freeze, and the roads, the little bit of mist that was out there froze over and the roads became pretty slick,” said PennDOT District 11 Executive Cheryl Moon-Sirianni.
One of the trouble spots is I-376 in Beaver County. The icy conditions caused 6-8 drivers to spin-out early this morning, leaving them stranded along the side of the road.

“I was just driving, and all of the sudden, I hit a patch of black ice and the car just immediately spun, and I tried to do what I could, went right into the guardrail and spun around several times,” said motorist Dave Homol.
PennDOT is bringing in extra salt trucks to help alleviate some of the icy conditions.

Moon-Sirianni said they’ve had crews out all night, with double crews that started at 4 a.m., but it was the unexpected nature of the event that caused the problems.

Pgh Police receive grant-Domestic Violence

A new unit that will focus solely on domestic violence has been set up by Pittsburgh Police. The Nina Baldwin Fisher Foundation has given them a $500,000 grant that Mayor Bill Peduto says will help victims in desperate need of help.

Like so many other metropolitan areas across the country, Pittsburgh finds that domestic violence calls are among the most frequent and most dangerous for officers. The victims are also some of the most vulnerable and helpless.

The additional resources will be used to support the victims of domestic violence, including witnesses and those who file for protection from abuse.

Women’s March this Saturday at Courthouse

The usual organizers of the Women’s March in Beaver County were surprised….pleasantly… Someone had already applied for the permit and it was a 15 year old Blackhawk High School sophomore. Media chairwoman of the Southwest PA National Organization for Women chapter, Michele Morris-Donner, said they reached out to the student, Natalie Leslie, and pledged their support and assistance. “We said, ‘Listen, you can have it sister. We’re proud of you and happy to have our young sisters involved.’” The rally is scheduled to start at 11AM Saturday at the courthouse.

DEP needs more from Big Beaver Borough

The DEP is asking Big Beaver Officials to submit an official sewage facility plan before they allow a permit for the Mount Airy Mini casino. The Borough did include in their last report that the sewage needs of Mount Airy Casino were being taken into account, but DEP spokeswoman Lauren Fraley said in an email that “….the DEP did not receive sufficient information from the borough to make a determination of the adequacy of the submission.” and returned the request as incomplete. The borough has been given permission to resubmit.

Ligonier fire set by renter

54 year old Brian McVicer’s neighbor said McVicer showed up at his house with a bottle of Yukon Jack liquor in one hand and a fire extinguisher in the other screaming, “They’re after me! They’re after me!” . This was after he set his rental home on fire Tuesday night in Ligonier Township, authorities said.

The home on Route 30 burned to the ground. Police said they are still trying to pinpoint why the man set the fire.
