There is controversy in the Beaver County Treasurers election race today. A mailer sent by republican candidate C-B Netheland accused his opponent Sandie Egley of  running a pay-to-play scheme. The flyer is in reference to an article in 2016 in which administrative assistant, Randi Bick was fired after Egley was made aware of the situation from then State Rep Jim Christiana. Bick was accused of  telling an unidentified man that if certain people didn’t participate more in Egley’s campaign, they would no longer be doing business with the county. According to The Beaver County Times, the mailer incorrectly referenced an article previously written in the Times that stated Egley had no knowledge of Bick’s actions.  Beaver County Radio erroneously reported that Bick was fired earlier this month when she was in fact fired when Egley was made aware of what she was doing. We apologize for the error. Egley told the times that the accusation against her was “an outright lie” and “entirely false”. 

Assistant Secretary Scott Stump of the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education visited the Career and Technology Center yesterday. Stump discussed with CTC officials how they prepare high school students for careers in trades. He said not all students are fit for a four year degree, and information about other alternatives should be available to students who chose a different path.

Congressman Conor Lamb has proposed a bill that would increase the penalties on theft from gun stores. This bill is gaining support from many of Lamb’s colleagues. In addition to stronger punishment for theft, this bill would also strengthen penalties on theft from gun ranges and shooting clubs. Lamb and others hope this bill will limit weapons trafficking substantially, and make businesses and neighborhoods safer.

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is unveiling a pay inequity proposal that aims to close the gender pay gap by holding corporations accountable when men are paid more than women. Harris’ plan would require companies to disclose pay policies while applying for a mandatory “Equal Pay Certification” from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Companies that fail to achieve certification would be fined 1% of their profits for every 1% wage gap they allow to persist for work of equal value. The U.S. senator from California says $180 billion would be generated over 10 years, with fines decreasing over time as companies strengthen their equal pay practices. The equal pay plan is the latest proposal from Harris, who has been seeking a break-out moment in a crowded field of Democrats seeking the party’s nomination.

MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump is claiming that one of his Democratic rivals for the White House, former vice president and Pennsylvania native Joe Biden, “deserted” Pennsylvania. Trump made the charge Monday night at a rally at Williamsport Regional Airport. In fact, Biden was born in Scranton and left for Delaware with his family when he was 10. Trump and Biden have made Pennsylvania front and center in their efforts to win the presidency next year.
