With President Barack Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, liberal and labor groups are planning events next week to pressure some Republicans on their home turf. Union members are mobilizing in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in events targeting Senator Pat Toomey.

Beaver County layoffs remain a possibility if the county’s buyout offer is not successful. So says Commissioners Chief of Staff Joe Weidner. Weidner tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that there is no target number for the program. As of this morning, he says 26 of about 131 eligible full-time employees have accepted the offer, a number that he says is beating their expectations at this point.

The Ambridge Area School Board is trying to get more people to attend its monthly board meetings. Recording Secretary Renee Gist tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that the board is showcasing all of its schools by changing its monthly board meeting sites. Last night’s meeting was held at Economy Elementary School. Next month’s board meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 20th at the State Street Elementary Schools. Gist says so far, feedback has been positive.

Traffic at the Beaver County Airport has declined over the last year, with 49, 796 takeoffs in 2015, compared to 56, 703 takeoffs in 2014. CCBF officials say the decline is a result of a lower enrollment rate in the aviation program at the Community College of Beaver Falls. They say that enrollment is already back on the rise, which should positively impact airport traffic.

Parents of Moon area students have been alerted to a second diagnosed case of whooping cough, this time at the middle school. Similar letters were sent March 11 and 12 to parents of students at J.H. Brooks and McCormick elementary schools. The health department warns parents to immediately contact a doctor if they develop symtoms of the disease. Symptoms usually include a long series of “coughing fits” followed by a whooping noise.
