A 35-year-old Pittsburgh woman led Moon Township police on a wild chase Tuesday afternoon, on foot, down a steep hill, across railroad tracks and then into the Ohio River. She’s been involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation, but appeared physically unhurt after the incident..Police say the woman crashed her car in a single-vehicle accident on Route 51, jumped inside the car of a man who stopped to help her and ordered him to drive off. He refused. She had no weapon. She then ran off and went over a median before fleeing down a steep hill and across railroad tracks. She then leaped from a steep river bank into the river. Police say she later fought against the members of a barge tugboat crew who were trying to rescue her. Despite the swift current and cold water, she swam for some time and distance before being caught. She then resisted being placed into an ambulance in Sewickley, on the other side of the river. Responders from several communities participated in the incident. A police boat placed the woman in a rescue basket after she was pulled from the water. McCarthy said the woman did not appear to be hurt when she was checked at a hospital in Sewickley, but she was evaluated at a Pittsburgh hospital’s trauma center before being involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation.
