PennDOT Removes Restrictions on Certain Vehicles in the Region of Pittsburgh

(Pittsburgh, PA) PennDOT announced that it has now lifted the temporary restrictions on certain vehicles from traveling on several roadways in southwestern Pennsylvania. PennDOT temporarily restricted certain vehicles from using the interstates to help ensure that theyremained open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm due to the winter storm that has impactedthe region. However, because of the winter storm, no commercial vehicles are permitted EXCEPT loaded single trailers with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices on the following roadways:

Allegheny County

  • Interstates 79, 279 (Parkway North), 376 (Parkways East and West), and 579
  • Route 28

Beaver County

  • Interstate 376 (Beaver Valley Expressway)

Lawrence County

  • Interstate 79
  • Interstate 376

Speed limits will also continue to be restricted to 45 mph on these roadways, as well as Routes 28 and 65 in Allegheny County and Route 65 in Beaver County, for all vehicles. Commercial vehicles that are not affected by other roadway restrictions must move to the right lane. In addition, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on the affected roadways while restrictions are in place. Finally, the I-279 and I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in the City of Pittsburgh and Ross Township of Allegheny County, will remain closed until crews are able to safely reopen to traffic. More information will be provided in advance of reopening the HOV lanes.
