Tune into Teleforum with Frank Sparks Friday May 25, 2018 for Radio Dial Rewind Day 5 at 9:10 a.m.

Frank will start out the morning with Al Goehring, former host of A.M. Beaver County who has seen and done it all during his decades-long tenure at Beaver County Radio: news, talk, sales, and much more. Al will share his memories and much more with the listeners.

 

 

 

Travis (Jim) Green will join Frank Sparks on Teleforum in the 10:00 a.m. as he reflects on his tenure at Beaver County Radio. Green worked at WMBA as a host and program director from 1980-86.

 

 

Then current Pa. State Representative Rob Matzie will join Frank at 10:40 a.m. to talk about his tenure at WMBA from 1987 to 1984 in which he handled many duties including what he is most famous for announcing sports broadcasts on WMBA.

 

 

 

 

Frank will finish out the morning at 11:10 a.m. when Rick Bergman joins him. Bergman got his start behind the microphone on WMBA in the 1980s as the host of “Air Your Opinion”, before jumping to the other side and doing “Afternoon Talk” on WBVP from 1987-1993. Rick returns to the air as he recollects memories of his time at Beaver County Radio with Frank Sparks on Teleforum.

Radio Dial Rewind Day 4 Featured John Nuzzo, Randy Cosgrove, Vince Orend, Jim Reed, and Pat Septak

Day 4 of Radio Dial Rewind on Teleforum with Frank Sparks featured 5  very popular personalities from their time at  Beaver County Radio …..

The Day was kicked of with one of the most recognizable personalities of all time John Nuzzo. This was John’s first time on the airways since his abrupt departure in 2014.  During the 1990s and 2000s, WBVP and John Nuzzo were synonymous identities to the ears of Beaver County Radio listeners. He was the host of A.M. Beaver County during the 1990s and early 2000s before starting his own mid-morning show, “The John Nuzzo Show”, which ran on WBVP and WMBA until 2014. When John’s voice was heard during Teleforum the phone lines lit up and were full during the entire interview. Caller after caller had nothing but well wishes for John and told them how much he is missed. John and Frank also reminisced about Nuzzo’s time at Beaver County Radio and the numerous remotes the two did together.

Next up was a voice familiar to all of Beaver County in Randy Cosgrove . Randy and Frank talked about Randy’s time  at both WMBA and WBVP.  Cosgrove  who started out in the mid-1980s as an on-air personality and sales representative, a  position he held  for over a decade. After a stint as PA announcer at Heinz Field for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cosgrove returned in 2014 as a sales representative and original co-host of the “Saturday Sports Slam” with Frank Sparks. Frank and Randy reunited for one day and reminisced about all the good times and guests they had on the slam.

In hour two Frank talked with Vince Orend who left selling cars at Dick Snedden  Pontiac to become a popular show host in the early 2000’s . Vince discussed all the good times he had during his show.

 

 

Frank was then joined by Jim Reed who worked for Hall Communications who owned  WBVP up til 1985. Jim told the listeners about the many relationships he forged when he came to town to see how things were going. Jim also was a very important part of the move when WBVP moved from the basement of the old Parkvale bank to it’s current location on 7th Ave. in Beaver Falls.

In hour three Frank was joined by Pat Septak current Beaver County Radio News Director. Pat talked about his experiences working the news and how much it has changed over the last 15 years. Pat talked about the different bosses he has worked for over the years and how each was very unique. Pat told the listeners how satisfying his job is being able to create stories and share the information on a daily basis.

Tune into Teleforum with Frank Sparks Thursday May 24, 2018 for Radio Dial Rewind Day 4. Frank will start of the day with one of the most recognizable personalities in Beaver County Radio history John Nuzzo.

During the 1990s and 2000s, WBVP and John Nuzzo were synonymous identities to the ears of Beaver County Radio listeners. He was the host of A.M. Radio Dial Rewind Day 3 Featured Dave Felts, Jim Fredrick and Barb Trehar!!!

 

Day 3 of Radio Dial Rewind on Teleforum with Frank Sparks featured 3  very popular personalities from their time at  Beaver County Radio …..

The Morning started out at 10 a.m. with former Teleforum host Dave Felts. Frank and Dave talked about Dave’s love for radio and music. Dave shared the story of when he was thrust into being the host of Teleforum in early 1981 and not having any experience doing a talk show just a few weeks into the show he was informed that , as Dave said, his first stuffed shirt was coming in for an interview, Eugene Atkinson. While Dave was doing the interview a young lady walked into the studio and handed Dave a note. Dave took a commercial break and then looked at the note which said that the White House need Rep. Atkinson to call right away. Dave said to the Atkinson to ask the President, Ronald Reagan, to come on the air.   Dave then went about the show filling in time till Rep. Atkinson returned to finish the interview with Felts and then during a commercial break Atkinson informed Felts that the President said yes he would come on the show and then the rest was history . Dave finished out the morning telling more stories about his time at Beaver County R0adio.

 Next up was a very familiar name to our listeners Jim Fredrick who called many a high school game in his day. Jim shared the many memories of calling games with the likes of Bob Barrickman, Tom Hays and Chris Shovlin just to mention a few. Fredrick discussed one of his favorite high school games he ever called when Aliquippa played Beaver Falls for the W.P.I.A.L. Championship in 2005 that went into triple over time. Beaver Fall’s Lance Jeter hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to secure the win for the Tigers. Jim went on to talk about the life long friendships that were a result from his time in broadcasting.  Jim is currently the Deputy Treasurer of Beaver County under Connie Javens.

To finish out the morning a voice familiar to the listeners of WMBA back in the day Barb Trehar was in studio with Frank and our intern Kaisha Jantsch. Barb talked about her time at WMBA and told about the unique way she was hired by Ruth Johnson. Trehar also went on to tell the story of the explosion that happened in the 1980′ s in Ambridge  and how she continued to read the news until Ruth told her to get out of the building . Trehar told the story of how she made it look like she quit on the air because people were having a fit cause she was a women and taking away a man’s job at a bad time in the area with all the steel meals closing down. Trehar got on the microphone and said I quit and then made it sound like she walked away and they left dead air for 3 minutes or so and then she came back in and said I was out in my car and Ruth came out and got me and told me to come back in and Trehar said Johnson told her they couldn’t find a man to do the job as good as a women. Very edgy for the time. After her time at WMBA Trehar moved onto bigger things.

Radio Dial Rewind Featured Jim Merkel, Mark Peterson, Ken Britten, Dave Felts and Chris Shovlin

Tuesday May 22, 2018 Beaver County Radio kicked off round 2 of the Beaver County Radio “Radio Dial Rewind” during Teleforum  with Frank Sparks. The day kicked off Monaca’s own Jim Merkel. Jim Talked about his days at WMBA and shared memories with the listeners.  Jim told the listeners about what he has done since his days as an 18 year old morning show host on WMBA. Jim is widely known for his years on the morning show at 3WS in Pittsburgh. After working in radio Jim started his own voice over business which he still operates today with his wife.

In Hour number two Mark Peterson, WBVP/WMBA Owner and Station Manager ,  joined Frank to talk about his newly released book “Behind the Microphone” that was released in celebration of WBVP’s 70th Anniversary on May 25, 2018 .Ken Britton and David Felts who contributed with Mark to write the book were also in studio.

Mark discussed the history of Radio and how WBVP came to be. The trio also discussed many other parts of the history that are contained in the book. The book is a highlight of everything that has occurred at WBVP and WMBA over the years. Hour Three featured a voice familiar to everyone in Beaver County and to all Robert Morris alum none other than 2006 Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame member Chris Shovlin. Chris and Frank talked about the early days when Chris graduated from Westminster College and first started working for WMBA.  Chris talked about his career as a radio morning man and a sports broadcaster and why he never left HOME as he called it for the bigger markets elsewhere. Shovlin reminisced about the days of working with The Teddy Bear Jim Reynolds at WBVP and the numerous pranks and fun times they had. Chris told the listeners about the time Reynolds dis robed as he was trying to do a news cast and how he always would do a news cast as a news reporter but on this day he cracked.

As we approach our 70th Anniversary at 1230 WBVP and 1460 WMBA, Beaver County Radio presents a series of live interviews with past and present staff to recollect the great history and memorable moments on WBVP and WMBA. On Tuesday May 22, 2018 during Teleforum with Frank Sparks he will have the following guests on air………

 

One of the more relaxed yet distinct voices of Beaver County Radio, Dave Felts was the host of WBVP’s “Teleforum” back in the early 1980s. He returns on May 23 at 10:10 AM to talk with current Teleforum host Frank Sparks about his time at Beaver County Radio, including his famous chat with President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Jim Frederick was a member of Beaver County Radio’s sports staff for many years, and on May 23, he’ll re-live some of his favorite moments from the courts and gridirons with Frank Sparks on Teleforum.

Barb Trehar joined the WBVP lineup in 1983 after teaching from several years. She returns to the airwaves on May 23 at 11:20 to take a look back at her tenure at Beaver County Radio

Before taking the Pittsburgh morning market by storm for three decades, Jim Merkel had his radio start at WMBA in the mid-1970s. He returns to his roots on May 22 at 9:10 as he sits down with Frank Sparks to discuss the beginnings of his long and distinguished career.

 

Current owner and station manager Mark Peterson joins program director and Teleforum host Frank Sparks for an on-air business meeting. Just kidding, of course…Mark has seen over 30 years of history on Beaver County Radio through his own eyes, and has studied all 70 years of WBVP and WMBA. He has compiled the histories into his new book “Behind The Microphone: The History of Radio In Beaver County, PA”, which will be the subject of the 10:00 hour of Teleforum on May 22.

and finally Frank will be joined by  Chris Shovlin whose voice has been heard on Beaver County Radio for over 40 years. He started as a sports announcer in the mid-1970s at WMBA, before becoming sports director and general manager during his long tenure at WBVP. He can still be heard every Saturday at Noon, as the host of “Frontiers In Learning” presented by Lincoln Learning Solutions.

Radio Dial Rewind today, May 21, 2018 on Teleforum!!!

 

 

Tune in from 9 a.m. this morning to 12 noon to Telefourm with Frank Sparks. We will be celebrating all week in conjunction with our 70 th Anniversary when WBVP first went Live on the air on May 25, 1948. Each Day this week and next we will feature voices of the past that made Beaver County Radio what it is today. Today we will kick it all of with former WMBA program director and sports announcer Bill Fontana from 9:10 to 10:00 AM live in the Beaver County Radio studio! Bill worked at WMBA in the 70s, representing the station on some of the nation’s biggest stages, and made a surprise return to Beaver County Radio in 2017 as part of our high school sports coverage team!

Then at 10:10 a.m.  current Sports Director Bob Barrickman will be welcomed into the Beaver County Radio studios to look back at some of the greatest sports moments of the last 70 years from 10:10 to 11:00 AM. Bob has been with WBVP since 1980, and his career landed him in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Then in hour number three we will be joined at 11:10 a.m. via phone by 1990s WBVP show host Dmitri Vassilaros joins to discuss the high-paced talk format of the decade on Beaver County Radio.

And to finish up day number on we will have Frank Greenlee, “The Big G”, worked at WMBA in the 1970s and 1980s on the show via telephone and he’ll reminisce with Frank Sparks on Teleforum on May 21 at 11:20.
