Kim Anastas and Johanna Guarino from Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Beaver County joined Frank Sparks on Teleforum

(Beaver Falls, Pa.) Kim Anastas , Executive Director and Johanna Guarino Development and Events Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Beaver County joined Frank Sparks in hour number one of Teleforum Wednesday January 22, 2020.

Kim and Johanna told the listeners about Big Brothers  Big Sisters of Beaver County and how January is National Mentor Month. They then went on to talk about some of the programs that they have. One of the newer programs they talked about is in four schools locally where the high school students mentor elementary students. The ladies are very pleased with how the program has progressed thus far. They  told the listeners stories about Bigs and Littles and the bond that some of them end up developing between the two of them even to the point that some Bigs have been in Littles weddings.

Kim talked about the extensive background check that they have to become a Big and   also took the listeners through the process of becoming a big, a little, and how the staff goes about matching the two together.

Johanna talked about Bowl for Kids Sake an annual bowl a-thon that is being held March 19-21 at Baden Bowl. The show is hosted by Jim Roddey and is dedicated to shining light on the great things going on right here in local neighborhoods, and the people that are making it happen.  Find out what all the buzz is about by joining “The Best Of Beaver County”.  This weeks edition was all about the Arts and Jim’s guests Kiesha Lalama a Center grad who has gone onto fame as a Choreographer,Educator, and  Motivator and Justin Fortunato  who is the Artistic Producing Director at  Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center.

In the first segment Mr. Roddey welcomed in Kiesha Lalama. Kiesha grew up in Center twp and graduated from Center High School (now Central Valley). She told Roddey of her youth moving from West Aliquippa at the age of one to Center Twp. and how she still spent a good portion of her youth in West Aliquippa visiting relatives almost on a daily basis. While in high school Lalama was a discus thrower earning a scholarship to Slippery Rock University. She only attended Slippery Rock for one semester after injuring her knee she realized that she couldn’t juggle both the arts and being a discus thrower and she then moved onto Point Park University. She told Roddey that was the best move she ever made.

Mr. Roddey then moved on to talk about Lalama’s career in the arts. She explained at an early age she started out in gymnastics and the went to dance school and learned so much from Doris Singer. Lalama then talked about her family and her sons who are both throw the discus like mom with the eldest having aspirations to be an Olympian.

Finally they talked about her journey in the arts leading up to her position of Director of Community Engagement & Strategic Initiatives for the Pittsburgh CLO. Roddey and Lalama also talked about a new partnership with St. Barnabas. The Pittsburgh CLO Academy’s summer performance camps that are designed to give attendees the opportunity to work with a professional directors, music directors and choreographers, and create an exciting musical theater experience culminating in a live performance on stage. The Summer Camps are offered in two locations – Downtown Pittsburgh and at the St. Barnabas Kean Theatre in Gibsonia PA. In segment two Jim talked with Justin Fortunato , Artistic Producing Director at  Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland. The pair talked about Lincoln Park’s School of Performing Arts  and the important roll they play  in our communities of Beaver County. Fortunato discussed how he has worked in educational and professional theater and that he loves what he does.

Fortunato discussed Lincoln Park’s theaters and how they have over 35,000 people who take in a show at Lincoln Park every year.  The unique thing about Lincoln Park is that students can perform on a professionally designed set right along with the professionals who are teaching them. Fortunato gave the listeners a preview of this years remaining shows.

Finally Roddey and Fortunato discussed his professional career and he informed the listener that he was just in the Pittsburgh CLO’s A  Christmas Carol. A Notable memorable Christmas Show at Wooley Bully’s

(New Brighton, Pa.) Wooley Bully’s in New Brighton hosted the Third Annual Notable Christmas Party on Saturday December 14, 2019. Frank Sparks co-host of Notes on Local Entertainment was the Emcee for the evening. Frank welcomed everyone to the party at 6:30 before a delicious dinner buffet was served courtesy of Wooley Bully’s in New Brighton.

At 6:45 pm James Tobin and Dewey and the Decimators took to the stage belting out holiday favorites including their original song Christmas Time. at 8 pm Frank introduced the Sidewinder Band. Sidewinder then belted out more holiday favorites for about an hour and finished the show up with a group of people singing  We Wish You a Merry Christmas that included  Beaver County Radio’s Mark Peterson, Frank Sparks, and Matt Drzik.

The Sidewinder Band was having so much fun that decided to stay and play a set of Classic Rock Music. Some of Beaver County Radio’s listeners that were lucky enough to win a VIP ticket were able to enjoy the buffet dinner and hang out in the exclusive VIP area.  Beaver County Radio’s Notable Entertainment Christmas Party was brought to you by Wooley Bully’s, Beaver Falls Municipal Authority, Al’s Corner, Don’s Auto Salvage, James Tobin and Dewey and the Decimators, The Sidewinder Band, and Beaver County Radio 1230 WBVP, 1460 WMBA, and 99.3 FM. Santa Claus Stopped and refueled with Cocoa and Cookies at Al’s Corner

(Koppel, Pa.) Santa Claus the Jolly ole Elf was running low on fuel and he stopped by Al’s Corner in Koppel to refuel and have Cocoa and Cookies with the kids. Word spread throughout the area that Santa was in town and people came from all over the area to see him. Beaver County Radio’s Frank Sparks and Matt Drzik anchored a live broadcast from Al’s from 6-8 pm on 1230 WBVP, 1460 WMBA, and 99.3 FM. The famous Beaver County Radio Personality Prize, with a few modifications from Santa’s Elf’s also was on hand.

Everyone who attended Cocoa and Cookies with Santa had a really good time. There was free pizza, cookies, cocoa and drinks available for all to enjoy. Each and every child who sat on Santa’s lap received a gift from Santa and Al’s Corner. There was even something for the adults in the form of free food certificates, lottery tickets and Al’s Corner gear that the could win just by spinning the prize wheel . Everyone had such a good time including Santa. The time came for Santa to go and it you could hear him yell “MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT”  as he headed back to the North Pole to finish Christmas preparations.

Susan Boser, Penn State Extension Water Resources Educator joined Frank Sparks on Teleforum

(Beaver Falls, Pa.) Susan Boser, Water Resources Educator for Penn State Extension joined Frank Sparks in the nine o’clock hour of Teleforum on Tuesday December 10, 2019.

Susan and Frank did a segment on water testing. They tested water that came from the faucet at the radio station, water from her house, and bottled water from a grocery store. Susan did three different types of tests on all three and told the listeners and the Facebook viewers the importance of having you water tested annually if you get your water from a private supply such as a well or spring.  You can watch Susan’s interview as it streamed live on Facebook by pressing the play button below…
