Phil Bourque Talks About RMU Celebrity Hockey Classic To Support “Hockey Is The Goal”

“We take action here in Pittsburgh. That’s how we roll.”

Those words were spoken by Phil Bourque on A.M. Beaver County to Matt Drzik, as he along with several other Pittsburgh athletes and celebrities will be battling former Robert Morris hockey alumni in the first ever “RMU Celebrity Hockey Classic” on November 7. The game will take place at the Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry at 3:30pm and doors will open at 3:00pm. All proceeds benefit “Hockey Is The Goal“, a fundraising campaign set to revive the men’s and women’s hockey programs at Robert Morris University in Moon Township.

Bourque, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and current color broadcaster for the Pittsburgh Penguins, said that the importance of college hockey in the Pittsburgh area cannot be understated, especially with its impact on the youth of the area. “More and more kids now are pointing their arrow in a different direction,” Bourque said. “They’re getting mom and dad to buy the skates and all the gear ’cause they want to play hockey.”

Phil also mentioned that along with the game itself on Sunday, there will a silent auction to support Hockey Is The Goal featuring hockey memorabilia. Ticket information and more details can be seen by clicking here.

Letang’s Overtime Winner Lifts Penguins Past Flyers, 3-2

By WILL GRAVES AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kris Letang stuffed a wraparound by Carter Hart 1:57 into overtime and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Philadelphia 3-2. Playing for the first time since Oct. 19 after testing positive for COVID-19, Letang scored his first goal of the season and helped the Penguins end a three-game losing streak. Pittsburgh played without star center Sidney Crosby and head coach Mike Sullivan. Both have tested positive for COVID-19. Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton scored for the Flyers.

AUDIO: Coach Sherman McBride Sees Bright Future For Ambridge Football

(Cover Photo/Sly Washington)

Never has a record of 2-8 felt so great.

Despite the losing record, Ambridge’s two wins not only doubled the entire win total of the previous five seasons combined (2016-2020), but it was enough to propel the Bridgers into fourth place in the Class 3A Northwest Six conference (2-3), giving the school its first playoff appearance since 2015.

The architect behind the Bridgers’ return to the postseason is Beaver County Sports Hall Of Fame member Sherman McBride–the longtime assistant for Aliquippa football, former track-and-field coach for the Quips, and an all-state running back in his own right.

McBride is now the HC at Ambridge, and he talked to Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County in lieu of the Bridgers’ upcoming first-round match with the Freeport Yellowjackets. McBride knows that his team is rather young (five freshman on the starting roster), but at the same time has faced a strong pedigree of teams over the 2021 campaign that has them battle-tested for the upcoming postseason.

More so, McBride sees the emergence of the youth and the success of the Bridgers as a stepping stone towards an even brighter future for the program. He acknowledged that several students have verbally made requests to join the football team, and that the school district from top to bottom has been supportive of this team. Perhaps even, McBride feels that continued momentum could propel Ambridge football back to glory that harkens the “heyday” of decades past.

The Ambridge/Freeport game will be on WMBA Friday night with a 6:30 airtime and a 7:00 kickoff.

Hammerin’ Braves Rout Astros to Win 1st WS Crown Cince 1995

By BEN WALKER AP Baseball Writer
HOUSTON (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have won their first World Series championship since 1995, hammering the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6. Jorge Soler hit his third home run of the Series, and Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson also connected. Max Fried threw six dominant innings in the signature pitching performance of the Series. Steadied by 66-year-old manager Brian Snitker, an organization man for four decades, the underdog Braves won the franchise’s fourth title. Consider it a tribute to the greatest Braves player of them all, Mr. Hank Aaron. The Hall of Fame slugger died Jan. 22 at 86, still rooting for his old team, and his legacy was stamped all over this Series.
