Pro Bowler, Super Bowl Champ Demaryius Thomas Dies at 33 Years-Old

By PAUL NEWBERRY AP Sports Writer
ATLANTA (AP) — Former NFL wide receiver Demaryius Thomas has died at the age of 33. Police in the Atlanta suburb of Roswell say Thomas was found dead in his home. His family believes he died from a seizure, and foul play is not suspected. Thomas was a Georgia native who earned five straight Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl ring during a prolific receiving career spent mostly with the Denver Broncos. His best seasons came when he teamed with Peyton Manning. Thomas played collegiately at Georgia Tech, managing to shine in a run-oriented offense. Quips PIAA 4A State Champs!!!

The Aliquippa Quips defeated the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders tonight 34-27 to claim the 4A State Championship. The Crusaders came out the gate running scoring on the second play of their drive with a 56 yard touchdown pass , making it 7-0 in the first 55 seconds of the game. Moments later the Crusaders recovered the ball on kick off in the Quips territory. A few plays later the Crusaders punched it in on a 16 yard touchdown run, missing the extra point, making it 13-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game. The Quips then woke up and scored on 42 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. And then the very next drive the Quips get an interception and return it 27 yards for the touchdown and take a 14-13 lead to end the first quarter. During the second quarter Bishop McDevitt came up big with another 50 plus yard touchdown pass, giving them the lead once again. But, that lead did not last long as Aliquippa marched 70 yards down the field and capped off the drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. The Quips missed the extra point and the score was tied 20-20 going into the half. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the fourth quarter had a lot of action. The quarter started with the Quips capping an 80 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run, giving Aliquippa a 27-20 lead early in the fourth quarter. After getting the ball back after a punt the Quips scored another touchdown from 8 yards out. The Crusaders then scored with less than 3 minutes in the game. But, they were unable to stop the Quips from getting the first down that sealed the game. With that first down the Quips were able to run out the clock and they became PIAA 4A State Champions.

Aliquippa Looks To Make History Tonight In Hershey

The Aliquippa Quips have done a lot on the football field over the last few decades. They’ve won three state titles and 18 WPIAL Championships, so it may be hard to imagine that they could be part of something that has never happened before. When they take the field tonight in Hershey, however, such opportunities are there.

The PIAA Class 4A Championship is tonight between Aliquippa (12-1) and the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders (12-1) out of District 3, and the two squads will battle it out on Beaver County Radio beginning at 7:00pm at Hersheypark Stadium; pregame for tonight’s contest will be at 6:30 on WBVP, WMBA, 99.3 FM & beavercountyradio.com.

Bob Barrickman, who will have the call tonight for the Class 4A title game, joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County to preview the game that could prove historic for the Quips and for Beaver County. Not only would a Quips victory give the school its first-ever title in Class 4A–despite Aliquippa maintaining a Class 1A enrollment–but as Barrickman pointed out, it would keep alive the possibility of having two Beaver County PIAA football champions for the first time ever. It’s only the second time the possibility has arisen (Rochester and Hopewell in 2002), and an Aliquippa win tonight coupled with a Central Valley victory on Saturday in the Class 3A championship would seal the double deal for Beaver County.
