(Bridgewater, PA)  Coaches and players from Western Beaver and South Side area high school football teams joined Tom Hays Bob Barrickman, and Kerry Lacey on the sports patio at Robert’s Roadside Inn in Bridgewater on Wednesday Night for the weekly live broadcast of “Coaches Corner” on WBVP and WMBA.  Western Beaver Head Football coach matt Gray , along with  South Side head coach Luke Travelpiece made for interesting conversation before a nice sized on site live audience.    Everyone enjoyed complimentary wings from Robert’s Roadside Inn and Pizza from Pizza Joe’s of Beaver.

Coaches Corner Can be heard Every Wednesday Night from 7 to 8 Pm on 120 WBVP and 1460 WMBA and is broadcast live from the sports patio of Robert’s Roadside Inn.

Steelers Monday Night Start

The Pittsburgh Steelers begin their 2016 season tonight in Washington against the Redskins. The Steelers will be without some of their weapons,  L’evion Bell begins his three game  suspension for violating the  leagues drug policy. WR  Marcus Weaton will miss tonight’s game with a shoulder injury.  The Steelers are 2-0  on Monday night against the Redskins.  The Steelers are 10-2 on Monday under Mike Tomlin. Two touchdown passes by Ben Roethlisberger  will push him pass Joe Montana for 13th  on the NFL’s all-time list.  On the Redskins siide,  Quarterback Kirk Cousins has thrown 232-consecutive passes at home without an interception.  Airtime for tonight’s game is 5:10 on the WBVP-WMBA.

PG Football Rankings

It is early but, some local teams appear in the PG WPIAL Rankings. In 5-A West Allegheny (2-0) is ranked fourth. In 4-A, New Castle ranks third. In 3-A, Beaver County teams dominate with the top four spots. In order Beaver (2-0), Aliquippa (2-1), Central Valley (2-1), and Beaver Falls  are the top ranked teams. It has been awhile but, Rochester makes the list in 1A at number three. In the PIAA rankings, Beaver, Aliquippa,  and  Central Valley are ranked three, four, and five in Class 3-A

Pirates Limp Into Philadelphia

With their playoff hopes fading, the Pirates begin a 10-game road trip tonight in Philadelphia.  The Pirates finished a 2-8 home stand. They were shutout 8-0 on Sunday.  Starling Marte remains sidelined with back problems.  He hasn’t played since September 5th.  Josh Harrison has a right groin injury.  He suffered the injury in Saturdays game and may miss several games.  The wildcard race is not pretty. The Pirates trail the Mets by 6 games and the Cardinals by 5-1/2 for the second wildcard spot.  Starting pitchers for tonight are  Gerrit Cole (7-9) for the Pirates and Jeremy Hellickson (10-9) for Philadelphia.  Because of the Steelers, the next broadcast game will be Tuesday night at 6:40 on WBVP-WMBA.

Haglan’s Number Retired At Freedom Home Opener

(Freedom, PA)  The Freedom Bulldog football fans had lots to celebrate Friday night.  The team won it’s first game of the season 24-21 over New Brighton and  standout, J.D. Haglan, had his  number 12 Jersey retired during a pregame ceremony.  Haglan led the Bulldogs to an undefeated season in 1973 before playing college football at Clemson University.    Haglan continues to work as a quarterbacks coach and is a highly sought after motivational speaker.   Tom Hays and Jason Colangelo broadcast the game action and a special halftime interview with J.D. Haglan  during halftime of Friday night’s game from Bulldog Stadium in Freedom.

Freedom is 1-1 on the season and New Brighton drops to 0-2.

Pitt vs Penn State

The date was September 16th 2000.  The place was Three Rivers Stadium. The Coaches were Joe Paterno for Penn State and Walt Harris for Pitt.  Pitt won the game 12-0. The interstate teams resume playing tomorow afternoon at noon in Heinz Field. WBVP-WMBA air time is 11:30

Pirates And Reds

Fresh off their 4-1 win last night, the Pirates and Reds play game number two tonight at PNC Park. Stephen Brault (0-2)  will start for the Pirates. Tim Adleman (2-3) pitches for the Reds.  The Pirates are now chasing the New York Mets for the second wild card spot. The Pirates trail the Mets by four games.  The next broadcast game will be Sunday against the Reds.  It starts with  the Neal Huntington Show at 12:40. Pirates pregame is at 1:10. First pitch is at 1:35.

Dietzen Bronze in Hopewell

It will be a bronze night in Hopewell Township this coming Sunday.  Two time Olympic  medalist Christa Harmotto Dietzen  will be honored  at a free gathering at Tony Dorsett Stadium.  After some introductions, Dietzen will greet those who attend the event.  Dietzen won a bronze metal as part of the US’s volleyball team in Rio last month.

Tebow To The Mets

ESPN reports the the New York Mets have signed former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow to a minor league contract. The 29-year-old Tebow will begin his baseball career with the Met’s instructional league team in Port St Lucie Florida.  The other team that showed interest in Tebow was the Atlanta Braves but, Tebow’s agent took the Mets offer.  Tebow worked out for 46 scouts representing 28 major league teams last week in Los Angeles.

Pirates Face Reds

Having salvaged one game from the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates begin a four game series with the Cincinnati Reds tonight.  One of the pitchers doing well Ivan Nova (4-0) will start for the Pirates.  The Reds will start one of their best Dan Straily (11-7) On the injury front, starter Gerrit Cole will throw a bullpen session Friday before returning to the major league squad Monday.  Starling Marte was held out for the second straight game. He is suffering from back spasms.  Catcher Francisco Cervelli started last night’s game. Monday night he banged up his thump. He was trying  to catch a ball in the dirt when it  hit off the tip of his thumb.  Trainer Todd Tomczyk drained the thumb before last night’s game. Pirates and Reds tonight 6:40 on WBVP-WMBA.
