With heavy hearts for their absent coach, the Ambridge Bridgers played strong on Wednesday night, but they could not overcome the play of the West Allegheny Indians on WMBA.

Absent for Ambridge was head coach Mark Jula, whose son Brett was killed in an auto accident in St. Louis last week. Assistant coach Matt Kupper filled in for Jula in the first-round game tonight.

The Bridgers led for the majority of the first half, taking a 29-23 lead at the midway marker. But West Allegheny charged back to outscore Ambridge 18-9 in the third, before completing the comeback to hold on 64-61 in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs.

The Indians were led by Jared Lanni who had 22 points, while Darius Lawrence led all scorers with 28 for the Bridgers. Both men were selected as CCBC Players of The Game.

#8 West Allegheny advances to play #1 New Castle on Friday. Ambridge’s season ends at 11-11.

Timing and depth were key in tonight’s game between Thomas Jefferson and Beaver Falls on 1230 WBVP.

When top scorer CJ Mason sat out the first quarter for the Jaguars, the Tigers jumped out to a 19-9 lead. When Mason returned for the second quarter, the lead dissipated on consecutive 3-pointers he hit to bring TJ back in the game, while Beaver Falls dealt with the foul trouble of Josh Creach. But Bryce Strati came off the bench to replace Creach and scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half.

The Tigers were led by Strati and Creach with 15 points apiece, as Beaver Falls wins over Thomas Jefferson 62-49 in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs. CJ Mason finished as the overall scoring leader with 21 for the Jaguars; him and Bryce Strati were named CCBC Players of the Game.

#2 Beaver Falls moves on to play #10 West Mifflin in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Thomas Jefferson ends its season at 11-13.

The Riverside Panthers could not overcome the resilience of East Allegheny as the Wildcats win it 68-62 in overtime on 1230 WBVP in the preliminary round of the WPIAL AA Boys’ Bracket. Eddie Gibbs led EA with 19 points, while Austin Dambaugh led the Panthers with 16. Dambaugh and East Allegheny’s Tech Brown (12) were named the CCBC Players of the Game.

East Allegheny moves on to take on Aliquippa Wednesday night at 8:00 on WMBA. Riverside ends its season at 10-13.

Senior Gabbie Smith rang up 47 points on the board for the Lady Spartans of Quigley Catholic, setting a single-game playoff record for scoring in WPIAL A Girls, and leading the way to a win over the Imani Christian Lady Saints 82-54 on 1460 WMBA.

Freshman Cali Konek led the Lady Saints with 35, sharing CCBC Players of The Game honors with Smith.

Imani Christian finishes their season at 14-9. Quigley Catholic improves to 18-5 and will face Winchester-Thurston in the second round of WPIAL A Girls; site and time to be determined.

Foul trouble and a cold streak doomed the Freedom Lady Bulldogs in their preliminary round matchup against the Charleroi Lady Cougars, as Charleroi takes a 43-36 victory on Beaver County Radio tonight. Freedom went 7:30 without a field goal in the latter minutes of the game, only scoring 4 points in the final quarter.

Maria Claybaugh scored 9 of her 10 points in the final half of play for Charleroi, while Deanna Drobka led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 13. These two earn tonight’s honors of our CCBC Players of The Game.

Charleroi advances to the first round of the WPIAL AA Girls Playoffs vs. #5 Neshannock. Freedom ends their season at 8-15.

The Blackhawk Cougars were eliminated from WPIAL playoff contention with a 73-62 loss to the Ambridge Bridgers on WMBA. Darius Lawrence led the way for the Bridgers with 33 points, sharing CCBC Players of The Game honors with Blackhawk’s Chance Siaus (20 pts).

The Cougars’ loss (along with Beaver’s loss on WBVP) allows Central Valley to gain the final playoff spot in Section 2-AAA, having earned a 3-1 record against Beaver and Blackhawk throughout the season.
