A person with knowledge of the matter tells The Associated Press that Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has been fined $100,000 and the club $250,000 because coaches improperly wore facial coverings last Sunday. The person said Friday that Tomlin and the Steelers were disciplined because members of the coaching staff were “not wearing face coverings at all times on the sidelines.” Tomlin was cited among the coaches not following protocols during the victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The league has been clamping down on violators of sideline protocols.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are huge favorites in their visit to longtime rival Dallas. The Cowboys are 13 1/2-point underdogs, the largest spread against them at home since 1989. That was the year owner Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys. They finished 1-15. Pittsburgh can set a franchise record with an eighth straight win to start the season. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin can tie the NFL record of 14 consecutive seasons of at least a .500 record at the start of a career. Dallas will have its fourth starting quarterback of the season.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A season that began with high expectations for Florida State and Pittsburgh has instead been disappointing. The Panthers have just two Atlantic Coast Conference wins and have allowed 30 or more points in four straight games, all of them losses. Meanwhile, the Seminoles have won just one ACC contest and have given up 35 points per game. Florida State also has allowed more than 500 offensive yards in its last three games.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys will have their fourth different starting quarterback of the season against undefeated Pittsburgh with Andy Dalton unavailable because of COVID-19 protocols. Coach Mike McCarthy says rookie Ben DiNucci is being benched in favor of either Garrett Gilbert or Cooper Rush. Gilbert and Rush will compete for the job in practice this week. Dalton is expected to be available again when the Cowboys return after their open week. DiNucci started once after Dalton sustained a concussion. Dalton replaced star Dak Prescott, who is out for the season with a broken ankle.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The pressure will be intense in NASCAR’s championship race at Phoenix Raceway for both the drivers and their team leaders. There is no practice or qualifying under COVID-19 protocols, so the cars must be dialed-in when they are unloaded on race day. The field this year includes Paul Wolfe, the only crew chief with a championship. Wolfe, Chris Gabehart and Alan Gustafson have all raced in this format before while Jeremy Bullins is making his championship debut. Only Denny Hamlin and Gabehart have experience working together in the winner-take-all title-deciding race.

Baltimore Ravens All-Pro cornerback Marlon Humphrey says he has tested positive for the coronavirus. In a post on Twitter, Humphrey wrote Monday: “I got the Rona hopefully I’ll be back healthy soon.” Humphrey missed practice last Wednesday with what the team described as an “illness” but returned Thursday and played in Sunday’s 28-24 loss to Pittsburgh. Green Bay also reported having a player test positive, and the Browns said they would hold meetings remotely on Monday after an active player was experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus.

NEW YORK (AP) — Linebacker Avery Williamson is going from winless to undefeated. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who are 7-0, have acquired Williamson from the 0-8 New York Jets. The Jets also sent a 2022 seventh-round draft pick to the Steelers for Pittsburgh’s 2022 fifth-rounder. The deal moves Williamson from one of the NFL’s worst teams to one of its best. The Steelers have yet to lose but are in need of depth at inside linebacker following a season-ending injury to rising star Devin Bush last month. Williamson is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the Jets in 2018.
