Two Pac-12 football games canceled as virus problems linger
By DAVID BRANDT AP Sports Writer
The Pac-12’s football schedule has been scrambled for a second straight week. Positive COVID-19 tests have led to the cancellation of both the Arizona State-California and UCLA-Utah football games. The Sun Devils’ home opener was nixed because of several positive COVID-19 tests among the team’s players and coaching staff, including head coach Herm Edwards. Utah also determined it didn’t have the minimum number of scholarship players available for its game against UCLA. There have been 14 games across the Football Bowl Subdivision canceled this week.

Pitt officials said the suspension of team activities is “due to COVID-related protocols.” The Panthers’ next game at Georgia Tech has also been postponed until Dec. 12.

Elliott drives from back of the field to first NASCAR title

Elliott drives from back of the field to first NASCAR title
By JENNA FRYER AP Auto Racing Writer
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — NASCAR’s most popular driver is now a Cup champion. Chase Elliott took the torch from teammate Jimmie Johnson by winning his first Cup title, driving from the back of the field to victory lane at Phoenix Raceway. The win for Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet was the first since Johnson, who retired after the race, won his seventh and final crown in 2016. Elliott’s car failed pre-race inspection and the penalty cost him the pole when he was sent to the rear. But he raced his way through traffic in the first stage and then took control of the championship.
