Kang and Gonzalez named starters as Bucs trim roster from 49 to 40.

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended two position battles on Monday, naming Erik González their starting shortstop and Jung Ho Kang their starting third baseman.

Kang beat out returning third baseman Colin Moran for the starting job, while Gonzalez claimed the Opening Day shortstop role over rookie Kevin Newman. Moran will get some work at first base the rest of the spring while continuing to play third, general manager Neal Huntington said. Newman still has a chance to make the team as a reserve middle infielder playing behind Gonzalez at shortstop and Adam Frazier at second.

The Pirates trimmed nine players, including infielder Kevin Kramer and third-base prospect Ke’Bryan Hayes, from their Spring Training roster on Monday.

Pittsburgh optioned Kramer to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he will move around the infield and potentially see some time in the outfield, and reassigned the following eight players to Minor League camp: Hayes, Will Craig, Nick Franklin, Geoff Hartlieb, Christian Kelley, Arden Pabst, Bryan Reynolds and Brandon Waddell.

Sharon-52 Beaver Falls-47 Final

It was a slow start to, what would be a great PIAA second round basketball game. After the first quarter it was Sharon-16 Beaver Falls-12. It was extremely close going to the half until Sharon scored a three at the buzzer to enhance their lead to 29-23 going into the half. Beaver falls came out scoring early in the third and took the lead. The lead bounced back and fourth the entire third quarter, but it was Sharon-44 Beaver Falls-40 going into the final quarter.
