SEATTLE (AP) — Sidney Crosby and Danton Heinen scored 25 seconds apart early in the first period, Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to 13 games with two goals and an assist, and the Pittsburgh Penguins routed the Seattle Kraken 6-1. Jeff Carter scored 1:47 into the game, Crosby followed with his fourth goal at 4:42 and Heinen scored on a wrist shot moments later to leave the expansion Kraken stunned at the early onslaught. Guentzel scored his 14th of the season late in the second period and added his 15th midway through the third. He has five goals in the past two games. Jordan Eberle scored for Seattle.

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Mikael Backlund scored the deciding goal in the seventh round of a shootout and the Calgary Flames beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 after blowing a late lead. Backlund broke in off the right side and ripped a shot into the top corner against Tristan Jarry. Jacob Markstrom sealed the victory by stopping Brock McGinn on Pittsburgh’s final attempt. The Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau and the Penguins’ Kris Letang scored in the third round of the tiebreaker. Milan Lucic scored in regulation for Calgary, which is 6-1-2 in its last nine games. Markstrom finished with 21 saves. Jake Guentzel scored for Pittsburgh, and Jarry had 31 stops.

Jarry finished with 30 saves after posting shutouts in the first two games of Pittsburgh’s three-game Canadian trip, at Montreal and Toronto. Jason Zucker and Jake Guentzel also scored for the Penguins, whose perfect road swing followed a three-game skid. Connor Hellebuyck had 33 saves for Winnipeg, which lost its third straight and fell to 7-2-1 at home.

MONTREAL (AP) — Teddy Blueger scored two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins snapped a three-game skid, pounding the Montreal Canadiens 6-0. Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots for the Penguins. Pittsburgh exploded in the first period with goals from Sidney Crosby, Danton Heinen and Jake Guentzel. Blueger and Brock Gill scored in the second, and Blueger added a late third-period goal. Cayden Primeau allowed five goals on 31 shots in two periods for the Canadiens. Samuel Montembeault replaced Primeau at the start of the third, allowed one goal and made 11 saves.

BOSTON (AP) — The owners of the Boston Red Sox are in talks to buy the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. Red Sox President Sam Kennedy confirmed on Wednesday that Fenway Sports Group has been working on a deal for the professional hockey club. Kennedy declined to elaborate on the terms of the deal. Sportico valued the Penguins last month at $845 million. FSG owns the Red Sox and Liverpool FC of the Premier League and is partners in the RFK Racing NASCAR team. The sports conglomerate has been looking to add another major sports franchise to its portfolio.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jeff Carter scored the deciding goal in a shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Florida Panthers 3-2. Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry, who has struggled in shootouts this season, gave an emphatic fist pump after stopping Anton Lundell to win it. Jarry also denied Aleksander Barkov and former Penguin Patric Hornqvist. Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the tiebreaker for the Panthers, who lost their third straight after opening the season with 10 wins in 11 games. Bryan Rust also converted in the shootout for Florida, and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stopped Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang. Evan Rodrigues scored his fourth goal and Teddy Blueger his third in regulation for Pittsburgh. Jarry made 36 saves.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kris Letang stuffed a wraparound by Carter Hart 1:57 into overtime and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Philadelphia 3-2. Playing for the first time since Oct. 19 after testing positive for COVID-19, Letang scored his first goal of the season and helped the Penguins end a three-game losing streak. Pittsburgh played without star center Sidney Crosby and head coach Mike Sullivan. Both have tested positive for COVID-19. Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton scored for the Flyers.
