Board passes 4th year of state universities’ tuition freeze

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Students at Pennsylvania’s state-owned universities won’t see tuition increase next year under a unanimous vote by the the system’s board. The State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors passed on Thursday what will be the fourth year of flat tuition. The struggling system hopes the Legislature will approve hundreds of millions in additional funding in the 2022-23 state budget. Tuition is currently about $7,700 for in-state undergraduates. The typical graduate leaves with $39,000 in student debt.

New Jersey to start recreational marijuana sales April 21

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Recreational marijuana sales in New Jersey for those 21 and older will begin April 21. That’s according to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. The governor’s announcement in a tweet comes just three days after state regulators green lighted permits for seven facilities that already sell medical cannabis to begin retailing recreational marijuana. The news comes about a year after the state’s regulatory commission started operating, and a year and a half after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot question to permit recreational marijuana for people 21 and older. New Jersey is one of 18 states, along with the District of Columbia, that have legalized recreational marijuana.

Brooklyn subway attack suspect is jailed without bail

NEW YORK (AP) — The man charged in this week’s Brooklyn subway attack has been ordered held without bail, with prosecutors saying he terrified the “entire city.” Frank James appeared in federal court Thursday, a day after his arrest in an attack that left 10 people shot. Authorities say the 62-year-old unleashed smoke bombs and dozens of bullets. His lawyer is cautioning against a “rush to judgment.” She asked for him to receive “psychiatric attention” in jail. He’s charged with a federal terrorism offense that applies to attacks on mass transit systems. Authorities say there’s currently no evidence linking him to terror organizations and are still trying to derive a motive.

Longtime Margaret Ross Elementary Janitor Reflects on his Career

Gino Stevens, Hopewell Township has worked as a janitor at Margaret Ross Elementary School in Hopewell Township since 2000. He got his start in buildings and grounds 38 years ago and worked there for 1 year and also worked at the junior high school. He lost his job at J&L and 2 weeks later he began his career at Hopewell.

Thursday was his last day  on the job. He reflected on his life and his career working in the schools. On Wednesday, the PTA hosted an event that included students and staff. He said there was a brief outdoor celebration and food and fun. He said “they did things for me I never expected.” He added, “I enjoyed the kids, they kept me young”.  A luncheon was held with the staff  in his honor on Thursday.
When asked what he’s going to do now that he’s retired, he said,  “I’m going to catch up on things around the house, and he and his wife Denise,  the junior high cafeteria manager plan to visit their son in Florida.

Pirates Agree to $13.5M. 2-Year Deal With All-Star Reynolds

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates and All-Star center fielder Bryan Reynolds have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a two-year deal worth $13.5 million. Reynolds and the Pirates were scheduled to go to arbitration after failing to come to an agreement on a one-year deal for 2022. Reynolds asked for $4.9 million, with Pittsburgh countering with $4.25 million. Reynolds hit .302 last season and is batting .227 through five games in 2022.

Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker Talks About Summer Construction To Help The “Cosmetics” Of The City

“Most people adequate change by cosmetics, so if they see something being torn down or something being built, then they figure change has arrived.”

Aliquippa mayor Dwan Walker spoke that message on the April 14 edition of A.M. Beaver County, as he talked with Matt Drzik about the upcoming summer projects brought on by grants applied for within the city. Walker mentioned that several construction projects will be happening over the course of the summer, in order that the city continue to progress: “We definitely want to get into the cosmetic stage of rebuilding Aliquippa and changing the landscape of Aliquippa; that builds progress, that shows progress, so that’s what we want to do.”

Walker also mentioned that there is a couple of events coming up in the city over the course of the next couple of weeks: one such event is a city-wide Easter Egg Hunt taking place at Uncommon Grounds from 10 AM to 2 PM in downtown Aliquippa, along with an e-waste recycling event on April 23 from 10 AM to 2 PM with dumpsters located downtown as well as at Plan 12 and Lefty Cepull Field.

VIDEO: Mayor Kenya Johns Talks About The Upcoming Events In Beaver Falls

“If we can get more neighbors to help one other, we can start solving our own problems.”

Those were the words of Kenya Johns, the mayor of Beaver Falls, as she sat down to talk with A.M. Beaver County’s Matt Drzik on the April 14 edition of the show. She provided updates on several of the city’s upcoming events, including a celebration for the renovation of the Second Avenue Playground to take place on April 22 & 23. The first day will be to help clean up and paint the playground area, and the second day will be to commemorate and officially announce Phase One of the renovation project. The Second Avenue Project is headed by the Beaver Falls Reunion Committee.

The mayor mentioned job openings in the city too, a topic that had first been brought up at the city council meeting on Tuesday night. Applicants for these positions must be CDL-certified. Those interested can submit applications to the Beaver Falls City Building, located at 715 15th Street in Beaver Falls

Johns also noted that there has been more activity and appearances at the city council meetings, even if the opinions there aren’t 100% harmonious: “Obviously in any business or anything you do, not everyone is going to be happy. But we want everyone to feel like even if they’re not happy with one decision, there’s another decision they feel like they’re being seen in, valued in, or represented in.”

Former High School Softball Coach Accused of Sexual Misconduct Involving a Teenager

29-year-old Jane Woodside of Kittanning, a former West Shamokin High School softball coach is under arrest, accused of sexual misconduct involving a teenager.
Pennsylvania State Police say Woodside is accused of having sexual contact with a then-15-year-old at a home in Plumcreek Township, Armstrong County in 2018.
Woodside is facing multiple charges including statutory sexual assault and institutional sexual assault.
She was arraigned Wednesday. Woodside’s bail has been set at $50,000.

15-year-old Shot in Stowe Township Wednesday

(Stowe Twp., Pa.) A 15-year-old who was shot in the chest yesterday in the area of Benwood Avenue and ninth Street in Stowe Township is in critical but stable condition.
The was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.
Homicide detectives initiated an investigation.
