Ambulance Stolen in Pittsburgh Recovered in Hopewell, Suspect in Custody

(Hopewell Twp., Beaver County, Pa.) An ambulance that was stolen as paramedics treated a patient on Mount Washington in Pittsburgh was recovered on I-376 outbound from the city on Interstate 376 in Hopewell Twp., Beaver County early Monday morning.
According to police, The incident began around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning as paramedics were called to the 200 block of West Sycamore Street. A man stole the ambulance, which state police later tracked to I-376 near Hopewell.
The man who allegedly stole the ambulance was taken into custody.

Ambridge School Board Reorganizes for 2023

(Ambridge, Pa.) The Ambridge Area School Board held their annual reorganization meeting on Wednesday night and Kelly Ramasco was elected board president. Elected to vice president was Amy Fitasko. Meeting dates for the upcoming year and committee chairmen were also announced.
In other business Laughlin Memorial Library representatives will be Tom Cephas and Matt Zatchey Baden Memorial Library representative is Amy Fitsko.

Ambridge Police Hold Stuff a Cruiser Event

(Ambridge, Pa.) Ambridge Police announced  that Lt. John Chickos and officer Austin Turner filled their cruiser with toys that have been donated. The Abominable Bumble visited and cheered them on.

On Friday, December 9, 2022 Officers Tim Depenhart, AJ Bialik, and Nathan Swierkosz will be on duty. The goal is to fill 2 cruisers  for  Toys for Tots.
The crew is credited for being an asset to Ambridge. It has been reported that one of the officers is a secret Santa every year, Christmas trees are purchased for 2 local families chosen at random.
Residents are advised to drop off toys  and deposit them in the police cruiser  in the lot  located at 600 11th Street.
 This crew, it’s been reported that they plan on claiming bragging rights for the next year.

Aliquippa School Board Reorganizes, and Hires Two teachers

(Aliquippa, Pa.) The Aliquippa School Board met on Wednesday night for their annual reorganization meeting .Tina Price Genes was reappointed president, and Nicole bible was reappointed vice president at Wednesday night’s meeting. Sam Weir was hired as the high school art teacher. An  elementary pre-k instructional aide  was hired. Superintendent Dr. Phillip Woods reported on the progress with the stadium project,   The Project Warm coat distribution by FedEX on Tuesday at the elementary  school was also reported by the superintendent. Each student received a  new coat.

Nominations Open for Beaver Musicians Hall of Fame

(Beaver County, Pa.) Nomination forms for the Class of 2023 Beaver Valley Musicians Hall of Fame are now being accepted through January 31, 2023. To be considered the candidate must have a reasonable connection to Beaver County and have made an outstanding musical contribution to society. The official nomination form can be found on the Beaver Valley Musicians Union website www.bvmusiciansunion.org using the “Nomination Form” tab.
Required information includes the candidate’s contact information, as well as similar information about the individual who is making the nomination. A detailed biography of the candidate’s musical contributions and a photograph should be included.
Since 1990 several outstanding musicians have been inducted into the Beaver Valley Musicians Hall of Fame. Their names are inscribed on the Hall of Fame Honor Roll that is displayed at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center School in Midland. Each musician receives a plaque of the Henry M. Mancini Award inscribed with the indicated class year at a ceremonial dinner.

PIAA Votes to Allow High School Athletes to Get Paid For Name, Image, Image and Likeness

(Harrisburg, Pa.) The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has ruled that student athletes can now start making money while in high school.
The PIAA’s board of directors has reportedly approved a policy to allow high school athletes in the state to profit from their name, image, and likeness, just like college athletes.
Now young athletes in Pennsylvania are allowed to earn money from endorsement deals and promotional activities through outlets on social media and through advertisements.
There are restrictions, stating that the athletes can’t wear their school’s uniform or make any reference to their school or their team.
Some kinds of products and services are banned from endorsements, including alcohol, drugs, gambling, and weapons.
The PIAA based the rule on a third and final reading by a vote of 26-4.

Two Guns Confiscated at Different Times Wednesday at Pittsburgh International Airport

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) The TSA is reporting that two loaded guns were confiscated after being found at the Pittsburgh International Airport security checkpoint on Wednesday.
A 9 mm handgun in a Westmoreland County man’s carry-on bag was spotted in the checkpoint X-ray machine and later in the day, an antique .22 caliber handgun was found in the pocket of a West Virginia man’s laptop bag, he claimed it was his grandmother’s. officials said.
Allegheny County Police were notified of both incidents and took the guns.
These were the 25th and 26th instances of a gun being seized at the airport this year. Thirty-two were found over the course of 2021.

Bob Barrickman Remembered By Colleagues For Passion, Dedication, Knowledge, & Kindness During “A.M. Beaver County”

“He was a great, great broadcaster…but he was a better human being.”

The recent news of the passing of Beaver County Radio’s Bob Barrickman opened the vaults of memory banks all throughout the county, and few had more in their vaults than those who worked alongside him during a sports broadcast. Current Beaver County Radio sports broadcaster Mike Azadian and former Beaver County Radio sports broadcaster Tom Hays reminisced about working with Bob on the December 7 edition of A.M. Beaver County.

Azadian, who joined the BCR Sports staff in 2020, learned very quickly what made Bob stand out as a broadcaster…including the parts where one does not stand out. “He was not about himself, he was about the kids,” Azadian stated. “I learned that it was that…you present the game, you talk about the kids, and you don’t make it about yourself. A lot of people in society today do that, and I learned that from Bob.”

That sense of empathy that Barrickman had towards high school sports and its athletes was also showcased when the game was over and analysis became the focus. “Bob was never really ‘pushy’,” Azadian added. “If a game was a tough game, Bob would ask good questions and tough questions, but he wouldn’t do anything to try and embarrass a coach or a player…he wasn’t about making people look bad.”

The Thursday night broadcast of the PIAA Class 4A football championship between Aliquippa and Bishop McDevitt, which Azadian will call with Bruce Frey, will be dedicated to Bob Barrickman.

 

The news was even tougher for Tom Hays, who had known Bob since their days in the late 1970s as co-workers for the Beaver County Times, before the future Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame Broadcaster (Bob in 2008) would recruit the future Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame Broadcaster (Tom in 2019) to join Beaver County Radio in the mid-1980s. From then until Hays’ retirement in 2020, the duo called countless championship and playoff (let alone regular season) contests in basketball, football, and other sports for Beaver County Teams.

“Bob was the absolute best,” Hays stated. “His passion for Beaver County high school sports [was] second to none. His knowledge is unbelievable. His preparation was unbelievable. I mean, I put a lot of time into every broadcast that I did…but Bob probably doubled that amount of preparation time.”

More so than the legendary broadcaster, Tom remembers Bob as a man without few rivals in Beaver County.

“He was a great guy, and that is not a cliché. That is a fact. Beaver County has lost a legend…I don’t think, in my life, I’ve ever met a finer gentleman than Bob Barrickman.”
