Delay’s 2-Run Double in 6-Run 7th Sparks Pirates over Mets 7-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Delay hit a two-run double in a six-run seventh inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Mets 7-4 on Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh stranded 10 runners through six innings before sending 10 batters to the plate against a trio of pitchers in the seventh. Pittsburgh scored its first three runs via a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit batter and a bases-loaded passed ball before Delay split the right-centerfield gap off rookie right-hander Grant Hartwig.

“Get him up and then find something out over the plate I could hit in the air,” Delay said. “Really just trying to get that run in. The situational hitting approach. Luckily, it found a gap.”

One out later, Bryan Reynolds hit a run-scoring triple.

“I think one of the things, when you leave guys on base like that, you work through pitchers and we did a good job of that,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “We missed some opportunities early, but we did a nice job staying patient.”

Colin Selby (1-0), making his fourth big league appearance, entered a 1-1 game in the sixth and got the win despite allowing back-to-back homers — a two-run pinch-hit shot by DJ Stewart followed by Jonathan Arauz’s second homer in as many games.

Selby, a 16th-round pick in the 2018 amateur draft from Division III Randolph Macon College, made 116 appearances in the minors before being recalled by the Pirates on Aug. 8.

“Came in a big situation — I know the second inning didn’t go the way he wanted it to, but came in in probably the biggest situation against one of the better hitters in the National League and did a good job,” Shelton said. “So I’m really happy for him. It’s nice to get that checked off.”

David Bednar tossed a scoreless ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances.

Liover Peguero homered in the second for the Pirates, who went 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position and left a season-high 13 on base.

The homer was the fifth in 22 big league games for Peguero, who had 13 homers in 76 games between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis before being promoted to the majors on July 17.

“All I’m trying to do right now is swing at the pitches that are good for me to hit,” Peguero said.

New York pitchers walked 10, their most since 2020. The Mets have lost 12 of 17 since starting their selloff late last month.

“I’m surprised that they didn’t score more runs (with) that many people out there,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said.

Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo tied his career high of 17 homers with a leadoff drive in the first.

Jose Butto (0-2) allowed three runs, two hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Bailey Falter gave up one run and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings for the Pirates. He is 0-7 in 10 starts and one relief appearance this year.

Mets starter David Peterson allowed one run and walked a career-high six in 3 2/3 innings.

Matzie: Nearly $106K Secured to Bring More Fresh Produce to Beaver County Students

AMBRIDGE – Beaver County students will see more fresh produce during the school day thanks to new grant funding of more than $105,900 from the state Department of Education, state Rep. Rob Matzie, D-Beaver, announced today.

Matzie said four grants awarded under the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program will allow the Aliquippa, Ambridge Area and Rochester Area school districts to supplement regular school meals with appetizing, healthy options.

“Having fresh produce available for kids during the school day encourages them to choose healthy snacks over starchy, sugary junk food and helps them stay alert, energized, and ready to learn,” Matzie said. “It directly impacts their classroom performance, and it also helps them form healthy eating patterns early in life. Securing this new funding is going to allow our school districts to keep those healthy options going for kids.”

The funding includes:

  • $38,808 to the Aliquippa Elementary School in the Aliquippa School District.
  • $25,128 to Rochester Elementary School in the Rochester Area School District.
  • $22,824 to Highland Elementary School in the Ambridge Area School District.
  • $19,152 to State Street Elementary School in the Ambridge Area School District.

Under the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, selected schools are reimbursed for the cost of making free fresh fruits and vegetables available to students during the school day, separate from the lunch or breakfast meal, in one or more areas of the school. The goals are to introduce children to new, wider varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce. The program also promotes nutrition education.

To be eligible, schools must participate in the National School Lunch Program. The FFVP prioritizes schools with the highest percentage of children eligible for free and reduced-price meals in order to give children from low-income families more opportunities to consume fresh produce on a regular basis.

Deluzio Statement on Marc Fogel’s Two Years of Unjust Detention in Russia

CARNEGIE, PA — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) released the following statement on the solemn two-year anniversary of Marc Fogel’s unjust detention in Russia. Mr. Fogel is a resident of Oakmont, PA and a constituent of Rep. Deluzio’s in Western Pennsylvania.

“My constituent Marc Fogel turned 62 recently, on July 28th. He’s a sports fanatic, especially a Pirates, Penguins, Steelers, and Pitt fan. He loves reading, World Cup Soccer, and Steely Dan.

“While he should be spending time with his loved ones in Western Pennsylvania celebrating, he is instead detained in a maximum-security forced labor camp in Russia.

“An international teacher for much of his life, and someone driven by service, Marc Fogel was detained in Moscow for possession of a small amount of medical marijuana, for which he had a medical prescription for chronic pain.

“That was on August 14th, two years ago today. And it’s been a long two years since.

“Those years have been extremely tough for Marc and his family, and they are concerned that harsh conditions he’s living in right now could threaten his health.

“It is long past time to bring Marc home.

“In Congress, I’ve introduced a bill and a resolution, and I am working with Democrats and Republicans alike to share Marc’s story and to push the State Department to prioritize securing Fogel’s release, along with others Russia has wrongfully detained.

“On this dark day that marks two years of his Russian detention, I hope we can turn a corner and make progress in bringing home this beloved teacher, husband, son, and brother.

“No matter what, I will keep fighting to bring attention to Mr. Fogel’s case and to build the public and political support to bring him home.”
