Gas Leak Forces Evacuations in Beaver Falls

A gas leak this morning in Beaver Falls has forced the evacuation of a building that houses senior citizens. Fire Chief Mark Stowe tells Beaver County Radio News that the leak happened at the Brodhead apartments at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 12th Street. Residents were bused to a church on Eighth Avenue until it is safe for them to return to the building, which will be ventilated.

Beaver Falls Replacing Bulbs On 7th Avenue

Does the city of Beaver Falls seem a little brighter these days? Well, it should. Beaver Falls Street Department employees have been busy the last couple of weeks…replacing old bulbs with L-E-D ones on the lamp posts along Seventh Avenue. Beaver Falls Mayor George Quay tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that the move will cut the city’s electric bill in half and the L-E-D bulbs will also give off considerably more light than the older bulbs.

Poll of Pennsylvania Voters Shows Kasich Gaining On Trump

A new poll out today shows that Ohio Gov. John Kasich is swiftly closing in on Donald Trump in the April 26th Pennsylvania primary election for the Republican presidential nomination. The Franklin and Marshall College Poll being released today shows Kasich with 30 percent of the support among likely Republican voters while Trump is at 33 percent and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is at 20 percent. The same poll found the Democratic primary for president is less competitive than the GOP. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton holds a comfortable lead, 53 percent to 28 percent, over Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Kennedy Boulevard Project Starts Today in Aliquippa

Kennedy Boulevard in Aliquippa will be restricted to one lane beginning today so that sidewalks and drains can be replaced, which is Phase One of Total Road Replacement. Sam Cooper, Street Department Manager, says the entire road will be replaced, and the long-awaited project should take most of the summer. The project begins at the Stone Arch and continues to Brodhead Road.

Gov. Wolf Relents After 9-Month Budget Impasse

Governor Tom Wolf said this afternoon he will allow an appropriations bill to complete this year’s state budget to become law without his signature. The Democratic governor said he does not believe the final budget is in balance, and so will not sign his name to it. But he said he will allow it to become law so the state can “move on to face the budget challenges” of next year. This means that schools will stay open through the end of the year. But he says that unless Harrisburg changes its ways, they won’t have adequate funds for next year. The budget bill will become law Monday, after Wolf does not act on it Sunday.

Pgh Airport Ramps Up Security After Brussels Terror Attack

Travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport may  see more security than usual following Tuesday’s attacks at a Brussels airport and metro station. Airport spokesman Bob Kerlik tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that the airport has brought in K-9 officers to do a precautionary sweep of the premises and officials have employed extra camera screenings. Kerlik says travelers should allow for extra time.
