State Rep. Aaron Bernstine Marks Beginning Of His First Term Representing 10th Legislative District

Among those  taking the oath of office Tuesday was State Representative Aaron Bernstine, marking the beginning of his first term representing the 10th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Rep. Bernstine offered his observations as a new member of the House and outlined personal priorities for the coming session, including bringing jobs back to Beaver, Lawrence and Butler counties.

Officials Investigating Yesterday’s Baden House Fire Now Know What Caused The Blaze

Baden firemen were called to a fire in the 400 block of Prospect St. after 6 a.m. on Monday. According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, officials investigating the fire now know what caused the blaze. Fire chief Dennis Baker said a female resident  placed a heating pad in the microwave  for longer than necessary causing a small kitchen fire. The resident was taken for treatment  at a local hospital for smoke inhalation by  her daughter and son-in-law, Chief Baker said.

Hopewell Home Destroyed By Fire

A Hopewell Township home located at 2073 Brodhead Rd. was destroyed by fire last night, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, who spoke with responding firefighters .who reported that the home was a total loss. The home was located in the area where several businesses are located , and sources said a woman died in a fire there several years ago. The fire was fully involved when firefighters responded at 5:53. p.m.  The home was located next to a gym.  Firefighters said they remained at the scene until 8:30p.m. Firefighters from Aliquippa, Independence Township, assisted Hopewell. Rochester was on stand by and Conway Volunteer Fire Department ‘s Rehab unit supplied a warm tent with coffee and food for the firefighters. No cause has been determined and the fire marshal has been contacted. Hopewell Volunteer Fire Chief Ed Haney didn’t respond to  messages for him

New Doughnut Shop Coming To Beaver

A popular doughnut shop will be opening a new location in Beaver early next year. Peace Love and Little Donuts is coming to 605 Third Street in Beaver. The shop will be located in the former BeauCo Bistro location. The company sells miniature gourmet doughnuts…and has 29 other locations across the country. The new shop will open in March.

Beaver County Treasurer’s Office To Process 2017 Tax Bills, Not Commissioners, As Previously Announced

The Beaver County Treasurer’s office will be sending out the 2017 tax bills to county residents after all. It was just over a week ago that the county commissioners announced that they would be sending out the tax bills this year, with the help of staff members, who were supposedly willing to volunteer their time and give up their vacation days to get the job done. But treasurer Connie Javens tells Beaver County Radio’s Pat Septak that she received an email from the law office yesterday afternoon stating that the tax bills and accompanying paper work would be returned to her office and that they would be processed there instead. Javens says that her office will get the job done, as she’s done the last 20 years, despite her office being short on staff this year. Javens say no explanation was given for the change. She began the work of processing the tax bills this morning. The tax bills include that 3.8 mill property tax increase that the commissioners approved and made official during their work session yesterday morning.

Aliquippa City Council Adopts budget

Aliquippa City Council adopted its 2017 no tax increase budget last Wednesday, a week early due to the holiday, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano. The 27.5 mill budget is $5,888,974.00. The city’s regular meetings are held on the first Wednesday at 7 p.m.  Work sessions are held the fourth Wednesday at the same time.

Arrest made in hit-and-run that killed man, 25, in Industry

An arrest has been made in a November hit-and-run that killed a man in Industry. The accident on Route 68 killed 25-year-old Brandon Bixler, who was walking home in the early morning hours of Nov. 27. His body was found by someone who was driving home from work, according to police. Police have arrested 62-year-old William Aeschbacher. According to a criminal complaint, Aeschbacher admitted to striking a dark object, but told police he didn’t know what it was. He told investigators he circled back around and saw it was a person, but instead of stopping or calling police, he drove home and didn’t tell anyone. Aeschbacher is charged with accident involving death. Charges of tampering with evidence and obstruction are pending. He allegedly told police he was having physical and emotional issues regarding the crash, but didn’t tell anyone what happened. He’s due in court in January.

Beaver County Commissioners Give Unanimous Final Approval To 2017 Budget

The Beaver County Commissioners today gave unanimous final approval to the 2017 budget that is in excess of 2-hundred-twenty million dollars, according to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti. With the budget comes a 3-point-eight mill tax increase. The budget approval ends a three month process of compiling the budget. The real estate tax increase is the first tax hike since 2009. The Commissioners also approved a five-dollar fee for motor vehicle registration by a 2-1 vote with Tony Amadio voting against. John L. Walker was hired as juvenile court master at a salary of 66-thousand-7-hundred-73 dollars…and Paul W. Burlingame, Jr.  was hired as mental health review officer at a salary of 65-thousand-3 hundred dollars.

HOPEWELL POLICE CHIEF PROMOTES 2 OFFICERS TO SGTS.

Veteran Hopewell Township police officers Eric Yerdon and Ronald McMasters were sworn in as the township’s 2 new sergeants by Police Chief Brian Uhrmacher at last night’s meeting, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano. Sergeant  Yerdon began his career as a part time officer 1996 and became full time in 1998.  He attended CCAC and CCBC for his education after graduating from West Allegheny High School He has also served as officer in charge. Sergeant Mc Masters is a Hopewell Area High School graduate  and started as a part time officer in 2002, and became full time in 2007 . He has worked in Independence Township, Shippingport, the 911 center, Medic rescue, and a  firefighter for Alkuquippa and Hopewell. Commissioners chairman Rich Bufalini  said the township has been looking to do the promotions for a long time . Township manager Norman Krause, Jr. invited  those in attendance, which included family, friends, and fellow officers  to a reception to honor the 2 sergeants  in the commissioners meeting room Food, refreshments and beautifully decorated cake with the  officers  names on it graced the table. The commissioners adopted the 2017 budget  of $9,834,955.00.  Real estate taxes will remain at 14 mills. All township offices will be closed Monday, January 2, 2017 in observance of New Year’s.
