PennDOT is announcing daylight lane restrictions on Camp Horne Road. Those single-lane restrictions will occur in each direction On Camp Horne Road between Ben Avon Heights Road and I-279 from 9 AM to 3 PM today and tomorrow because of rumble strip milling and paving work.

The work is part of the $87.94 million dollar Parkway North Improvement Project which includes patching & overlay, preservation of bridges & overhead sign structures, repairs to walls & ramps, lighting improvements, HOV repairs and more including an anti-icing system installation on bridges at the McKnight Road interchange.

Please use caution while driving through the area, especially on your way to today’s Pirates game.

Aliquippa School Board met Wednesday night

School bells will be ringing in Aliquippa and other districts in the county next week and some new staff members were hired at last night’s meeting.

 

Ashley Furr was hired as a 9th grade English teacher, Zackary Caine was hired to teach music, band, and chorus Cheryl Beauford was hired as the school nurse for the elementary school, and Christine Luketic will teach 7th grade science. Dr. Pete Carbone, superintendent said there will be participation in the ROTC program at Ambridge and possibly 3 students will attend the full day program, and 4 students will attend the 1/2 day program in the afternoon. Dr. Carbone said that English as a second language will be taught and the program is contracted through the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit.

Students in grades 4 through 6 at the elementary school will have 4 classes a day,, taught by 4 different teachers, and they will be taught math, English, science, and reading

The board accepted the resignation of Bobbi Jo Cater who was teacher’s aide in the district.

POWER, will be introduced as a new student information system was approved and will enable parents to check students grades and attendance . All of the information will be on and app, Dr. Carbone told the board. The administration and a select teachers group worked to implement the plan, he said

Dr. James Tatum was hired as the district’s physician beginning july 1, 2017 to June 30, 2019. He will be paid $4,000.00 a year. Dr. Daniel Christo was hired as the ACCESS physician for a 3 year term beginning July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020.

Hopewell Commisioners, Council on Government meet at CCBC

Hopewell Township Commissioners’s chair Rich Bufalini reported on a meeting with the Council of Governments that was held at the CCBC dome on Thursday at last night’s work session. Bufalini said the Deputy Secretary of the PA Dept. of Community Affairs Rick Villelo , who is a former mayor from Lockhaven, PA was present. Vilello and former Beaver County Commissioner Dennis Nichols, of the Beaver County Chamber of Commerce, who is working with the Department of Community and Economic Development, will assist the township in writing grants. Township manager Norm Kraus, Jr. was a member of the committee for the event attended by about 285 people.

The commissioners approved the hiring of 2 2 full- time sewer department laborers, Nicholas Zon and Shane Dugan, they begin their duties today., and will be paid $16.13 an hour.

Dylan Kmetz was promoted to full time seasonal employee at the community park. His salary increases from $7.25 to $9.00 an hour.

The commissioners regular meeting is Monday, July 28 at 7 p.m.

Pittsburgh International Airport is one of 72 airports in 31 states receiving a grant from the FAA for infrastructure improvement projects. The $12.3 million dollar grant here will be used to rehabilitate a de-icing pad that’s been in use for more than 20 years.

A pot of oil left in an oven set to “clean” mode is the cause of a fire at an 8th Ave home yesterday morning in Beaver Falls. 3 people were home at the time, but all safely left the house. 2 dogs were rescued by firefighters-one from the roof and one from inside. According to Beaver Falls Fire Chief Mark Stowe damages to the home and belongings inside come to about $100,000 and approximately $10,000 to a neighboring house.

Heinz Field speaks Steelers to most, but some people are seeing soccer.

The United States, Mexico and Canada are all teaming up to be considered as host sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Right now, the list of possible hosts sites is pretty long, but Heinz Field is still making the first-round cut. as one of 49 possible stadiums up for consideration.
The final list needs to be submitted by March 2018. By that time, the committee needs to trim its list to 20 to 25 stadiums.

 

VETERAN RECEIVES HONORS

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Vietnam War veteran in Pennsylvania has finally received medals for his service after 45 years of waiting. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports 67-year-old Francis McKenna was presented with several medals and awards for his time in the Air Force during a ceremony Friday in Tarentum. Many of his missions in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia were classified so there was little proof available to show he served until veterans representatives researching his case found a record.

DROWNING IN LAWRENCE COUNTY

THERE WAS A DROWNING IN A LAWRENCE COUNTY POOL OVER THE WEEKEND.FIRST RESPONDERS ARRIVED AT THE NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP POOL TO FIND FAMILY AND FRIENDS PERFORMING CPR ON THE 3 YEAR OLD BOY. HE HAD BEEN FOUND UNRESPONSIVE JUST AFTER 6 PM SUNDAY AND WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE HOSPITAL EARLY MONDAY. THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE SAID THAT THE DEATH OF GEOVONNI ROTAR WAS DUE TO DROWNING AND HAS BEEN RULED AN ACCIDENT.

Trial for Double Homicide

18 yr old Ronald “Reno” Foster is on trial as an accomplice during the shooting deaths of 16 yr old William Cade Booher and 18 year old Dane Mathiesius. Lawrence “Pooh Rat” Reddick and Deonte Jones (both 18) are also facing charges related to the double homicide

The plan had been to rob them during a marijuana sale.

During the trial Erin Terry, an Aliquippa resident, testified that a 13 year old boy knocked on her window asking for help after he witnessed the fatal shooting. She said that the youngster said he was in the car with the two when they were both shot.
Defense attorney Paul Gettleman said many of the prosecution’s witnesses are polluted by deals offered by the District attorney’s office. “When someone else has your freedom, you’ll say whatever.” he said

Monument to Honor Vets in Georgetown

South Side Area high School seniors , Shane Barr and Alyssa Reed’s senior project is to raise funds for the erection of a memorial in Georgetown to honor veterans from all wars, both living and deceased. Borough secretary Marilyn Allison said a walk-a-thon and 5 K race will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Allison said other activities include: a bake sale, car show, flea market miscellaneous vendors and a Chinese auction. Refreshments will be sold, and there will be a 50/50 drawing: basically something for everyone. “If event attendees buy a $20 ticket based on Saturday’s 3 digit lottery number at 7 p.m. they have a chance to win $2,500.”

The statue, she said will be unveiled , Saturday, September 2 at an event to be held from 2 to 4 p.m.
