Pat Catan’s In Green Garden Plaza Closed Fue To Flooding

A water line under the floor of Pat Catan’s in Green Garden Plaza  caused flooding on December 28, necessitating the store to be closed, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent.  A  supervisor for the store said they are hoping it will reopen in March.  All merchandise was removed , and workers are on the scene to fix the problem. Ambridge Teachers Back To Work

Students and teachers in the Ambridge Area School District return to class today, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano. No new talks have been scheduled  between the teachers union and the board to award a new contract.  Ira Weiss, district solicitor said yesterday that the state mediator hasn’t been in contact with the district to schedule any negotiations. The teachers contract expired on June 30, 2015.  Wages and health care costs are the sticking points, according to Chris Konkus , spokesperson for the teachers union .

Aliquippa City Council Searches For A New City Controller

Aliquippa City council held its reorganization meeting  and agreed to advertise  the opening for a city controller, according to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano. Mayor Dwan Walker said that the former controller resigned from the elected position., and the post wasn’t filled.  Anyone interested that has an accounting and finance background must submit a letter of interest and resume   to the city. All other positions supporting city government, including the solicitor and engineer were reappointments. Council went into executive session for several  to discuss personnel issues at its regular meeting,  Following the executive session , council voted unanimously to implement a more cost effective way to monitor workers hours and cut down on payroll. Recent audits revealed that a system must be implemented  Options will researched before the new plan is put into place.
Mayor Dwan Walker announced that  25 small new businesses  are opening  in the city.  One that opened recently is a soul food restaurant.  He announced that the Burger King construction starts  next month.  Zoning and code enforcement officer Mike Demcak announced an orientation meeting for the Blight and Vacant  Property Committee will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the city building.

Macy’s has announced it is closings its store at the Beaver Valley Mall. Back in August, Macy’s said it would close 100 under performing stores across the county, but at the time did not name the affected stores. According to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti, the company released an official list on Wednesday…and the Beaver Valley Mall location is on it. The store will close by the end of the year, taking with it nearly 80 jobs.

Beaver County Commissioners Debating What To Do With Sugar Shack At Brady’s Run Park

Yesterday’s county commissioners work session lasted about 40 minutes, and according to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti, who was at the work session, 30 minutes of that time was spent haggling over what do to with the Sugar Shack at Brady’s Run Park. The roof on the building is in bad shape and needs replaced. The Beaver County Conservation District wants to occupy the Sugar Shack beginning next Tuesday to begin tapping trees for the April maple syrup festival. The commissioners authorized public works to get three bids immediately and an attempt is going to be made to get the roof replaced in short order.

Beaver County Commissioners Still Faced With Friendship Ridge Problem

The Beaver County Commissioners are beginning the new year with an old problem…the estimated one-point-four-million dollars due from the new owners of Friendship Ridge. According to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti, who was at this morning’s commissioners work session, Solicitor Andrea Cantelmi wanted to discuss the latest on Friendship Ridge…but in executive session. The Friendship Ridge problem has been a recurring issue for the commissioners, but so far, all the conversations have been in executive session. Also reserved for executive session was the arbitration case with the sheriff’s deputies and contract talks with the detectives.

State Rep. Aaron Bernstine Marks Beginning Of His First Term Representing 10th Legislative District

Among those  taking the oath of office Tuesday was State Representative Aaron Bernstine, marking the beginning of his first term representing the 10th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Rep. Bernstine offered his observations as a new member of the House and outlined personal priorities for the coming session, including bringing jobs back to Beaver, Lawrence and Butler counties.

Officials Investigating Yesterday’s Baden House Fire Now Know What Caused The Blaze

Baden firemen were called to a fire in the 400 block of Prospect St. after 6 a.m. on Monday. According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, officials investigating the fire now know what caused the blaze. Fire chief Dennis Baker said a female resident  placed a heating pad in the microwave  for longer than necessary causing a small kitchen fire. The resident was taken for treatment  at a local hospital for smoke inhalation by  her daughter and son-in-law, Chief Baker said.
