Joe Peters, Republican candidate for State Attorney General, appeared on Teleforum with MIke Romigh earlier today. Peters was asked, as Attorney General, how he would combat the growing heroin epidemic in the state. Peters said he would use a multi-pronged approach, dealing with the heroin addict as both a law enforcement issue and a health issue. Peters was born and raised in the Scranton area of Pennsylvania.
Four presidential candidates will campaign in Pennsylvania this week, just days before the state’s April 26th primary election. Erie, Philadelphia, Media, State College, King of Prussia and Pittsburgh will all get a visit either today or Thursday from Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, John Kasich or Ted Cruz. Kasich visits Market Square in downtown Pittsburgh today.

A pedestrian struck then dragged by an SUV Sunday in Beaver Falls remains in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian, with the suspect who reportedly drove from the scene now in the Beaver County Jail on various charges. At around 6:30 last night, an SUV driving along the 1300 block of 7th Avenue swerved off the road, struck a parking meter and tree while also hitting a 22-year-old male, who was dragged about 20 feet. Beaver Falls Capt. John DeLuca declined to identify the victim. He tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that city police found the SUV with severe front-end damage in an alley three blocks from the accident scene. 34-year-old Anthony Darwin of McKees Rocks was arrested on charges of causing an accident involving death or personal injury, aggravated assault by vehicle, damage to unattended vehicles or property, and driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, Captain DeLuca said. He remains in jail with bond set at $75,000.
A crowd of people turned out Saturday at the Joe Namath Practice Field at Beaver Falls High School to raise awareness about the signs of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Shaun Duguay of Rochester, organized the event. State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, a Democrat from Franklin Township, was there and he spoke to Beaver County Radio’s Mike Romigh, who was also at Saturday’s event, about the need to support veterans and ensure they have support from the community and access to the help they need. About 25 people then came out to the field and took the Drop 22 Challenge, a viral Internet trend where people post videos of themselves doing 22 push-ups.
Pennsylvania has become the 24th state to legalize a comprehensive medical marijuana program. Democratic Governor Tom Wolf signed the bill into law yesterday afternoon surrounded by a jubilant crowd of supporters at the Capitol. The bill’s drafters say it could take two years to write regulations and get retailers opened. But a provision allows parents to legally administer medical marijuana to their children before the bill takes effect in a month. Patients could take marijuana in pill, oil, vapor, ointment or liquid form, but would not be able to legally obtain marijuana to smoke or grow.
Authorities say an explosion has destroyed half of a duplex in Forest Hills, Allegheny County. Forest Hills Fire Chief Jim Theilacker says no one was home when the residence exploded on Sunday afternoon, causing part of the building’s roof to collapse.
This is a big weekend for the congregation of a local church that has found a new home. The Soma Gathering will hold its first services Sunday in a building that will now be known as The Well, which is more than just a church. Marc De Jeu is pastor of the Soma Gathering. He tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that he wants the new building to also be a place where people can just drop by and take advantage of resources available to them. The Well is located in the same building as the former First Christian Church at 1401 6th Avenue in Beaver Falls, right behind the WBVP-WMBA studios. The church is making the big move from the previous worship site located in the basement of the Berkshire Banquet Hall on 8th Avenue in Beaver Falls (which used to be the original Beaver Falls Masonic Temple building). The Soma Gathering is a plant church from First Presbyterian Church in Beaver. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The Soma Gathering started in 2010 in the Beaver County YMCA on Junction Stretch in New Brighton. Around 120 people currently worship at Soma on a regular basis. Beginning Wednesday, April 20th, the new building, which was given to Soma by the previous congregation, will be used as a community center with free wi fi and food.

Titanic sank in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean..after colliding with an iceberg, four days into the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. Tonight…Ambridge native Rhonda Wozniak will speak at the Laughlin Memorial Library in Ambridge about her work, which is to preserve artifacts from the Titanic expedition. Wozniak tells Beaver County Radio newsman Pat Septak that she is a graduate of Ambridge Area High School and a long-time listener of WBVP and WMBA. She says proceeds from tonight’s dinner and lecture will benefit the library. However, if you’re interested in attending, and you don’t already have tickets, you’re out of luck – the event is completely sold out!
Senator John Rafferty was a guest on Teleforum with Mike Romigh this morning. Senator Rafferty represents residents of Pennsylvania’s 44th Senatorial District in Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties. He is now running for the office of Attorney General in Pennsylvania. Senator Rafferty told Romigh that the Attorney General’s office is such a disaster right now that if someone doesn’t turn it around quickly it will take years and years for the state to recover. Rafferty is a fourth-term senator.
