Several Beaver County Police Departments Honored In Special Award Ceremony

Hopewell Police Chief Brian Uhrmacher said that his department received a 2016 Gold CommunityTraffic Safety  Award  from  AAA last week.  According to Beaver County Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, Chief Urmacher said the award is based on  enforcement of traffic laws, accident statistics, education, and any other traffic safety programs. Aliquippa, Beaver Falls, and Conway received Silver Awards.   Chief uhrmacher said the highest award is platinum Beaver,M oon, and New Brighton, and New  Sewickleyreceived those awards. The presentations were made at the Cranberry Marriott.

Beaver County Commissioners Continue Their 2017 Budget Hearings Today

The Beaver County Commissioners will continue their 2017 budget hearings later today. This afternoon…the commissioners will meet with the parks and recreation and tourism department, the planning commission, weights and measures and information technology. All meetings are open to the public and are being held in the commissioners’ conference room of the county courthouse.

Aliquippa School Board Meeting Centers Around High School Sports

Aliquippa School Board hired Amarliis Lopez as the district’s Spanish teacher beginning November 29. 2016. Beaver County Radio Correspondent Sandy Giordano reports that her salary will be $40.134.00 with benefits. Dr. Peter M. Carbone, superintendent said.  Dwight Hines was hired as interim basketball coach  for the 2016-17 season.  He will be paid $8,033.00 for the season. High school  special education teacher Joie Dusold  was approved to operate the after school program  for those seniors  that don’t have all their credits needed to graduate.  The credit recovery program is through Lincoln Learning Solutions.  Ms. Dusold   will be paid, $4,000.00 to operate the program. Dr. Carbone said he met with officials from CCBC and that SHELL CHEMICAL  is sponsoring the STEM ACADEMY   within the college’s Aviation Academy .  He said the program offers more opportunities for students to obtain college courses. ALIQUIPPA schools will be closed tomorrow , the school board approved the measure Wednesday night.   The Quip football team plays at Heinz Field against Beaver Falls at  11 a.m.tomorrow. The day will be made up Monday, February 17, 2017, it was originally a severe weather make-up day.

Beaver County Human Services Building In Beaver Falls Said To Be In Need Of Extensive Repairs

The Beaver County Commissioners had a light agenda at their work session today. According to Beaver County Radio’s Greg Benedetti, budget director Ricardo Luckow recommended Huntington National Bank be used for next year’s tax anticipation note. Huntington informed Luckow that the bank needs financial details by December 9th. The Commissioners also heard a report from the public works department that the Human Services building in Beaver Falls needs extensive repairs. Problems include a leaking roof, inadequate heating and air conditioning and some plumbing leaks that have entered the duct work. The Commissioners are going to meet with the building’s tennants to determine how repairs will be financed.

Two Burglary Suspects Are Nabbed In Hopewell Township

Hopewell  Township police responded to a possible burglary on Ross Dr. in the  township Monday morning  at 7:32 a.m.after witnesses saw 2 men attempting to gain entry into a home on Ross Dr. Chief Brian Uhrmacher  said the witness gave a detailed description  of the 2 males and the vehicle they arrived in .  Responding officers, observed the vehicle fitting the description given by the witness  occupied by the suspects leaving the scene.  Officers stopped the vehicle, and detained the suspects. 23-year-old Jalen Mull and 30-year-old Nathaniel Rossi of Crescent Twp were charged with burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, and possessing instruments of crime.  Rossi was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspects were arraigned before District Justice Janet Swihart, and taken to the Beaver County Jail .  Bond is set at $15,000 straight cash.  Preliminary hearings for both men are set for  Monday, November 28.

Expanded Steamfitters Training Facility In Harmony Now Open

The expanded Steamfitters Training Facility in Harmony is now open.  The state has put five-million dollars into the building, where workers are trained for the local construction and energy industries.  Governor Tom Wolf was there yesterday to introduce the facility, saying it will allow for a better, more modern and dynamic environment through hands-on-training.  The facility graduated about 170 apprentices annually but the upgrades will lift that number to 270.

Officials at Staples Store In Monaca Warn Consumers Of Hackers Computer Scam

A representative of the local Staples in Center Township said that messages have been received from a group posing as MICROSOFT   by several customers.  According to Beaver Count Radio News Correspondent Sandy Giordano, representatives advise not to give out any information, especially credit card info, they are hackers. Messages are either live or tape recordings.  Techs advise customers to just hang up. Technicians are available at Best Buy and Staples stores in the area  if anyone has issues with their computers.  Antivirus protection should also be up to date.

2017 Beaver County Budget Hearings Continue Today

Another round of 2017 Beaver County budget hearings gets underway today at the county courthouse. This afternoon, the commissioners will meet with the controller at 2:00, the elections bureau at 2:30, the recorder of deeds at 3 and the jury commission at 3:30. All meetings are open to the public and will take place in the commissioners conference room of the courthouse.
