HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania is getting its most serious discussion since Democratic Gov. Wolf began calling for an increase in 2015 and, for that matter, since the federal minimum wage last increased in 2009. The question, Democrats say, is how big of an increase leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature will support and what sort of concession they will demand in return. Today, rank-and-file lawmakers return to the Capitol.

TRAFFIC ALERT: PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists that line painting operations on various roadways in Beaver County will occur today  through Saturday, June 8, weather permitting. Work to repaint lines will occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in the following locations:

· McCleary Road in Raccoon and Greene townships;

· Tank Farm Road in Independence Township;

· Shivler Road in Greene and Raccoon townships;

· Park Road/Dutch Ridge Road in Brighton Township; and

· Darlington Road in Patterson Township and Fallston Borough.

 

TRAFFIC ALERT: PennDOT District 11 is announcing inspection activities on the East Rochester-Monaca Bridge (Route 51) over the Ohio River in East Rochester and Monaca boroughs will begin today, weather permitting. Single-lane alternating traffic will occur on the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Monday, June 10 as crews conduct inspection activities. Additionally, a lane restriction will occur as needed on southbound Route 65 under the bridge.  Motorists are advised to use caution, allow extra time, and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says she believes President Donald Trump actually wants to be impeached so the Senate could clear him. She made her comments on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night. Pelosi said – quote – “He knows it’s not a good idea to be impeached, but the silver lining for him is then, he believes, that he would be exonerated by the United States Senate. Pelosi maintained the Republican Senate is “completely in the pocket of Donald Trump.” And she noted that not one GOP lawmaker in the Senate has “spoken up.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says it’s looking into possible legal action to block President Donald Trump from imposing a 5% tariff on imports from Mexico if the nation doesn’t crack down on Central American immigrants trying to get into the United States. Neil Bradley, executive vice president of the Chamber, called the tariff “exactly the wrong move.” The group represents about 3 million businesses.

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Eight kids are sharing the title at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after bee organizers ran out of words that could challenge them. The ending was unprecedented in the 94-year history of the bee and raises questions about how the competition can adjust to kids who appear nonplussed by any word in the dictionary. The co-champions closed out the bee by spelling 47 consecutive words correctly, and they said fatigue was a much bigger problem than the words.

It’s been 17 years since a violent storm killed one person and injured dozens of others at Kennywood Park. On May 31, 2002, at around 7 p.m., a microburst hit the park, damaging dozens of trees and collapsing the pavilion above the The Whip, a ride located in the “Lost Kennywood” area of the park. 29-year-old Stephanie Wilkerson of Monroeville was killed in the collapse. Other people were trapped and had to be rescued. Kennwyood was highly attended at the time of the storm, and many of the guests were there for school picnics. In total, nearly 60 people at the park were hurt. Some of the victims required surgery. Wilkerson’s family sued Kennywood and Landau Building Co., the contractor that built the pavilion above The Whip. They claimed undersized support posts caused the collapse. The lawsuit was settled for nearly $2 million. The pavilion was never rebuilt.

A garage, a camper and a shed on the same property were destroyed in suspicious fires this morning. The fires happened on property located on the 1800 block of Harlansburg Road in Hickory Township, Lawrence County. There were no initial reports of injuries. Police are hoping to review surveillance video to learn more about what happened.
