There’s a new push to allow all police departments in Pennsylvania access to radar guns. But not everyone thinks it’s a good idea. Right now, only state police can use them. Two bills in Harrisburg could soon change that. Sen. Jim Brewster, a Democrat from McKeesport, sponsored a bill that would allow local police to use radar guns to enforce speed limits. Pennsylvania is the only state in the country limiting their use to only state police. But the bill has opponents, like the National Motorists Association, which claims that radar, for local or state police, are almost exclusively used in speed traps. Brewster said his bill, and a companion bill, is getting support in Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania State Police will be ramping up patrols this summer in hopes of keeping drivers safe. Troopers are teaming with Triple-A for Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort. State police say they’ll be more visible with enforcement patrols, targeting speeding, distracted driving and aggressive driving. More DUI checkpoints are also planned in the deadly crash-reduction campaign.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania state lawmakers’ newly filed ethics forms show they accepted more than $83,000 in free trips last year and collected a variety of gifts, booze and free meals. Travel took legislators to Taiwan, Israel and destinations around the United States. Unlike most states, Pennsylvania doesn’t limit how much lawmakers and other public officials can accept from lobbyists and others. Bills pending in the House and Senate would ban many types of gifts and travel, with exceptions.

HAZLETON, Pa. (AP) — Police say a bullet from a gun that accidentally discharged in a northeastern Pennsylvania home went through a wall and struck a 13-year-old girl who was taking a bath. Hazleton’s police chief says the bullet went through furniture and a wall before hitting the girl at about 1 p.m. Sunday. Chief Jerry Speziale says the round pierced the skin but didn’t lodge in the girl, who was rushed to a trauma center. Another child who was also in the bathtub wasn’t hurt.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say a sport utility vehicle hit a teenage pedestrian and plowed into a south Philadelphia clothing store, critically injuring the teen and sending three other people to hospitals. Police say the 71-year-old driver was trying to park in front of the Rainbow Shop just after 1:30 p.m. Monday when she hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Police said she hit a 16-year-old youth on the sidewalk and dragged him as the SUV plunged 25 feet through the glass window and into the store.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Three people died in accidents involving all-terrain vehicles over the Memorial Day weekend in Pennsylvania. One person was killed early Monday in Luzerne County and two others were killed Sunday in Triumph Township, in the northwestern corner of the state. Pennsylvania had 702 ATV-related fatalities from 1982 to 2014, according to statistics compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That’s the second-most in the country, behind Texas.

Part of a tree came down, blocking part of Freedom Crider Road in New Sewickley Township. The tree came down as storms moved through the area this morning. Crews shut down the road in both directions in the 200 block for several hours. The tree was removed and the road was reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
