KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghans are bracing for a possible new wave of Taliban attacks after President Donald Trump abruptly called off talks with the insurgent group, which vows to continue its fight against what it calls “foreign occupation.” Trump’s surprise weekend announcement came shortly before a string of highly sensitive days in Afghanistan, including Monday’s anniversary of the death of a famous anti-Taliban commander, the Shiite Muslim commemoration of Ashoura on Tuesday and the 9/11 anniversary Wednesday.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvanians who won’t be able to vote in person this fall will be able to apply online for absentee ballots for the first time. The Wolf administration said Monday voters can use the new site next week, for absentee ballots in the Nov. 5 election. Applications will be accepted starting Monday, Sept. 16.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania students and faculty are speaking up for inclusion after a student’s recent social media post. The Snapchat video shows the student spewing racial slurs and threatening violence against African-Americans. University officials were quick to condemn the student’s remarks while an online petition is calling for the student’s expulsion.

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) — Kennywood Park’s newest and biggest attraction has won an industry award as best new roller coaster of the year. Kennywood’s Steel Curtain won the Golden Ticket honor for best new coaster awarded by Amusement Today, an industry publication. Amusement Today’s overall favorite steel roller coaster was Fury 325 at Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina. Europa-Park in Rust, Germany, was named best park.

The V-A Pittsburgh Health Care System is holding a town hall meeting today for feedback on improving care. It’s being held this afternoon at the Beaver County V-A Outpatient Clinic in the 300 block of Brighton Avenue in Rochester. The event will feature V-A officials who can answer questions on benefits and provide information.

Beaver County’s recycling program is getting a big boost from a Shell Chemicals grant. The county will use a 225-thousand-dollar grant to keep the recycling center at Bradys Run Park in Brighton Township open four days a week as well as one Saturday per month. Currently, the center is only open two days a week. The center is closing for one week in mid-October to prepare for the new hours and influx of drop offs.

A northeast Ohio doctor is being accused of paying underage girls for sex. Albert Aiad-Toss was charged last week in federal court with sex trafficking and child pornography charges. Prosecutors say the Youngstown-area doctor paid girls between 12 and 14 to have sex and gave money to a 15-year-old girl to pose sexually in a cellphone video.

A missing elderly woman from New Brighton has been found safe. Police were looking for 81-year-old Eleanor Lewarchik, who went missing Sunday. Investigators were concerned because Lewarchik has medical conditions that can make her confused easily. Lewarchik was reportedly found somewhere in the state of Maryland.
