State Department Of Health Receives Funding For Sexual Violence Prevention, Education
The state Department of Health is receiving one-point-two-million dollars toward sexual violence prevention and education. A spokesperson says the money will be used to provide training and help to dozens of rape crisis centers statewide. The funds are being provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
AccuWeather Employees Accused Of Sexual Assault
AccuWeather, whose former CEO is President Donald Trump’s nominee to oversee the government weather forecasting and ocean science agency, agreed to pay $290,000 after female employees complained of sexual harassment. The family-run weather company’s conciliation agreement was published in June after an investigation by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and first reported Monday by The Centre Daily Times. AccuWeather denies the allegations but said it will make changes.

Flu-Related Deaths Going Up In Pennsylvania
The state is reporting that the flu-related death count in Pennsylvania has risen by six since last week. According to the numbers released yesterday, the fatality count in Pennsylvania due to the flu has risen to 37 for the current season, 24 of whom are age 65 and older. There have been 30-thousand, 592 reported cases total state-wide, more than 57-hundred more than a week ago.
PA’s State Owned University System Promises Transformation
Leaders of Pennsylvania’s state-owned university system are promising a transformation amid declining enrollments, rising costs and lackluster state support. Tuesday’s hearing before the House Appropriations Committee comes after enrollment at the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education fell below 100,000 for the first time since 2001. Chancellor Dan Greenstein warns that the system is close to hitting the ceiling for tuition increases.
Aftermath of Jerry Sandusky Sex Abuse Scandal Continues At Penn State
A small group of Penn State board members is challenging a 2012 university-funded investigation of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. In a 109-page report, they say their review of documents found the investigation was tainted by improper contacts with the university, the NCAA and law enforcement. Former FBI director Louis Freeh’s probe concluded administrators and football coach Joe Paterno hushed up the Sandusky scandal to avoid bad publicity. Freeh calls the new report “dishonest.”
Pennsylvania Sues Verizon
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is suing Verizon over promised incentives it didn’t deliver on. The suit claims Verizon told customers they would receive an Amazon Echo or a free Amazon Prime subscription for selecting certain two-year contracts. Some consumers never received the promised items while Verizon continued to market the deal.
Penn State College Releases Research Data On Medical Marijuana
Researchers at the Penn State College of Medicine say medical marijuana may stop the growth of colon cancer cells. Officials say they found at least ten compounds they would consider fairly effective against colon cancer cell growth. It’s uncertain how medical marijuana would impact other types of cancer.
