This morning, water hydrants will be flushed in various locations throughout Beaver County. While flushing water hydrants is necessary to ensure a good water quality, this process could result in lower pressure or dirty water temporarily.

For several weeks now, Brush Creek Park has been a top talking point at the weekly Commissioners’ work session, with citizens and officials from Marion Township discussing the matter with the Board of Commissioners. So with the recent announcement that the Commissioners were looking into road repairs at Brush Creek, it should be no surprise that the topic once again dominated the session with plenty of discussion and citizens’ opinions.

Public Works director Dan Colville was the first to speak about the issue, saying that in order for the road entering Brush Creek to be suitable for users, that a full repair is necessary:

 

Commissioner Sandie Egley also felt that the road was a concern, and one that masks the “beautiful” semblance of the park itself:

 

Egley, however, did comment that the goals being used for the soccer fields were also an eyesore, being rusted and infested to the point of unusable.

But several Marion Township residents were resilient in their concerns with the park. One of them, Jody McElwain, said that one thing that the park was missing was a new playground that she felt would not cost the county much, and also that the conditions of the park itself could lead to trouble:

 

While the Commissioners seemed to agree with the outcries of concern, they held firm to the prioritizing of the road to the park being fixed first. Solicitor Garen Fedeles echoed as much, and said that the county is looking into possible financial sources to get the repairs done:

 

Commissioner Tony Amadio and Assistant Solicitor Nathan Morgan were absent from the August 7 session. The commissioners will reconvene for public session on August 8 at 10:00 AM.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke is attending an El Paso, Texas community rally timed to serve as counterprogramming to President Donald Trump’s visit. An El Paso native, O’Rourke will address the #ElPasoStrong event at a park Wednesday afternoon, during Trump’s visit. O’Rourke is also attending a morning remembrance at a high school and making an evening visit to a makeshift memorial outside the Walmart where a gunman killed 22 people.

GLENSHAW, Pa. (AP) — Police in a Pittsburgh suburb shot and killed a teacher who they say pointed a gun at them outside his home. Allegheny County Police say Shaler Township officers responded to a report about a man behaving erratically on Tuesday afternoon. Police say 49-year-old Donald Babbit ignored commands as he advanced while pointing the handgun at them. Three officers opened fire. Babbit was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he died. Babbit was a teacher in the Penn Hills School District.

A lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America says lawyers believe they have turned up allegations of sexual abuse against more than 350 people not previously identified in files released by the organization. Attorneys with the Abused in Scouting group filed the suit Monday in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court. The Boy Scouts have said that when any volunteer is added to a database of those who pose a risk of abuse, they are reported to law enforcement and removed scouting.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea says a recent launch of ballistic missiles was meant to send a warning to the Washington and Seoul over their ongoing joint military exercises. North Korea has conducted four rounds of weapons tests in two weeks, with state media saying the most recent Tuesday were supervised by leader Kim Jong Un. The launches come amid a stalemate in nuclear negotiations with the U.S. Though the tests are prohibited by the U.N., U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed their significance.

UNDATED (AP) — The weekend shooting massacre that killed 22 people in El Paso, Texas, happened in a city that’s sometimes called the “Ellis Island” of the border. Many Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and beyond can trace their families’ roots to El Paso. The white gunman is believed to have written an anti-Hispanic rant before opening fire with an AK-47 on Walmart shoppers. Many of the victims were Latino.
