Biden Rises in Poll as Ukraine Scandal Unfolds

Support for Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden ticked higher following reports that President Donald Trump pressured his Ukraine counterpart to investigate Biden, while Americans overall are less supportive of impeaching Trump than they were months ago, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday. In a sign that Biden’s supporters appear to be standing by their candidate, 20% of Democrats and independents said they would vote for him in statewide nominating contests that begin next year according to the Sept. 23-24 poll, up 1 percentage point from a similar poll that ran last week. It also found that 37% of the American public thinks Trump should be impeached, down from 41% in a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll that ran earlier in September. This compares with 44% in a poll that ran in May, after the Trump administration released portions of the Mueller investigation on Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Chris Christie on Ukraine: Trump’s Biggest Weakness – He ‘Swings After Every Pitch’

President Donald Trump’s biggest weakness as a candidate is that he “swings after every pitch,” former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who campaigned against Trump for the 2016 GOP nomination, said Tuesday while commenting on the growing Ukraine controversy. “I said this to the president any number of times: ‘You don’t have to swing at every pitch,'” Christie told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “He swings after every pitch — the one at your head, the one in the dirt, the one 4 feet outside. It just doesn’t make sense in my mind to do that.” Christie made his comments on Trump’s campaign-style while being asked about the timing of the president’s call to the president of Ukraine, coming about a week after he’d instructed acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney to block just under $300 million in military aid from going to Ukraine.

Trump Whistleblower Wants to Meet With Lawmakers

The whistleblower behind the Ukraine complaint wants to meet with lawmakers, according to their counsel. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., tweeted Tuesday that his committee was in touch with the whistleblower’s counsel and looking forward to “testimony as soon as this week.” The whistleblower filed a complaint about his phone call with Ukraine’s leader, but Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire refused to comply with a deadline to hand over the complaint to Congress even though it had been deemed “credible and urgent” by the intelligence community inspector general.

Trump Says He Put ‘No Pressure’ on Zelenskiy

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House account of a phone call this summer shows President Donald Trump asking the new president of Ukraine to investigate Democratic foe Joe Biden and his son. Hunter Biden was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company at the time his father was vice president. Trump says he offered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy nothing as incentive.

Police: Mom Left Young Kids Alone to Go Help Friend in Fight

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh mom faces felony child endangerment charges after she allegedly left her two young children home alone so she could help a friend who was about to fight someone nearby. City police went to Mattie Sims’ home after a neighbor asked them to check on the children, ages 4 and 1. Authorities say they found deplorable conditions in Sims’ home, and she was drunk when she came home about 30 minutes later. The children appeared to be unharmed but were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

PLUM, Pa. (AP) — A driver who was under the influence of fentanyl and marijuana when he caused a head-on crash that killed two people is now headed to prison. Edward Cass III was sentenced Tuesday to serve seven to 14 years, followed by seven years’ probation. A judge had found the 27-year-old Saltsburg man guilty in July of two counts of homicide by vehicle while DUI in the August 2017 crash. Cass’ lawyer had argued for a lesser sentence, saying his client was remorseful and has been sober since the crash.
