PA’s Top Prosecutor: 1,862 Calls Made To Clergy Abuse Hotline

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s top prosecutor says investigations remain underway after 1,862 calls were made to his office’s clergy abuse hotline in the past 12 months. The hotline was set up as his office released a landmark grand jury report exposing decades of child abuse within the state’s Roman Catholic dioceses. Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Tuesday about 90 percent of those calls concerned allegations of abuse or cover-ups within the Catholic church.

Bullying, Self-Harm, Suicide are Most Common Concerns at PA Schools

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Bullying, self-harm and suicide are the most common concerns fielded during the first half-year of operation for a new threat reporting system that covers Pennsylvania schools. The state attorney general’s office says the Safe 2 Say Something program generated more than 23,000 tips between mid-January and the end of June. The report says about 1,300 tips were determined to be pranks.

2 Approaches to Gun Control

PA Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey have reacted to the shootings over the weekend in very different ways. Toomey proposed a background check bill that he worked on with West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin, That would greatly expand the use of background checks. The bill has failed twice after being introduced after mass shootings. Senator Bob Casey called for sweeping gun control measures and increasing efforts to combat the rise of White Nationalism in America. Gun control measures include a nation-wide ban on semi-automatic assault weapons and a red flag law for dangerous individuals trying to purchase guns.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — An ex-girlfriend of the Ohio gunman who killed nine people says he showed her a video of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting on their first date. Adelia Johnson says in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that Connor Betts often joked about having dark thoughts. She says he told her that he had bipolar disorder and that his talk didn’t scare her because she thought it was a symptom of his mental illness.
