Ambridge Teacher Being Nominated for PA’s Teacher of the Year

A teacher in the Ambridge Area School District is being nominated to become Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Nicole Darroch, a STEAM or science, technology, education, art, and mathematics educator, was nominated by the Beaver County Education Trust. Darroch is vying to be one of a dozen finalists statewide. She was the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Teacher of the Month in 2017.

Man Accused of Rape after Posing as 7-Year-Old Girl’s Uncle, Says He Had Lapse in Judgement

A man accused of posing as a seven-year-old girl’s uncle then raping her will stand trial for those charges. Juwan Mitchell allegedly lured the child away from her grandmother’s home on Hazlett Street in Northview Heights, then assaulted her on September 15th at another home’s basement bathroom. A detective testified the 22-year-old Mitchell admitted to the assault…but claims he simply had a lapse in judgement. Mitchell remains in custody on 200-thousand-dollars bail.

Commonwealth Residents Warned About Fishing License Scam

The Commonwealth is warning residents that buying hunting and fishing licenses through third party websites could leave them scammed. Both the state Fish and Boat Commission and Game Commission report a number of anglers and hunters have recently tried to buy their licenses via non-affiliated sites and ended up getting nothing in return. According to these agencies, the Fish and Boat “Outdoor Shop” online portal is the only proven and reliable way to get licenses and permits.

New Brighton Woman Accused of Leaving Kids Alone in Van

A New Brighton woman is accused of leaving her kids alone in a broken-down van. Valerie Fullum was arraigned yesterday on child endangerment charges. Rochester police say Fullum left a baby and nine-year-old child alone on Route 68 last month while she walked to a gas station. The older child was found in the driver’s seat with the keys in the ignition. Fullum was recently accused of taking a girl to get a birth control implant against her will, but the charges were dropped.

Philadelphia Man Cleared of Murder After 27 Years in Prison

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia man who has maintained his innocence in a murder case for nearly three decades has been ordered free from prison after a judge overturned his conviction. Willie Veasy’s long-running appeal came to an end Wednesday morning, when a judge tossed out the murder conviction. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the judge told the 54-year-old Veasy “You’re a free man,” as a crowd in courtroom erupted in applause. He’d spent 27 years in prison.

Kenyan Man’s Search for his Father Runs into Church Cover-up

SAMBURU, Kenya (AP) — An Italian missionary priest allegedly impregnated a Kenyan girl when she was just 16. But the priest _ who to this day denies paternity _ was transferred by his superiors, and a Kenyan man was found for the girl to marry. The Catholic Church’s efforts to conceal what is alleged to have happened in Kenya would stretch over three decades and stymie a Kenyan man’s efforts to find out why he was so much lighter-skinned than his siblings.

Fight Brewing Between Trump and Dems Over Constitution, Impeachment Battle

WASHINGTON (AP) — A fight is brewing between President Donald Trump and Democrats over what the Constitution means when it says “the sole power of impeachment” lies with the House of Representatives. The White House counsel is vowing to end all cooperation with House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into the Republican president and on Tuesday called the inquiry “illegitimate.” Courts have hesitated to tell the House how to run the impeachment process.
